Osun by-election: Adeleke defects to PDP ahead of APC primary

An All Progressives Congress aspirant in the Osun-West senatorial district, Chief Ademola Adeleke, may have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party to contest the July 8 senatorial by-election.

A chieftain of the PDP, who pleaded anonymity, said this while speaking with our correspondent on the telephone, on Tuesday.

The PDP chieftain said Adeleke would contest on the platform of the opposition party.

He said, "We have been talking to our leaders and members on this. We want to win this election and we know that he is popular. Adeleke will contest on the platform of the PDP.

"The APC has decided to clear Mudashiru Hussain despite his disqualification and the Adeleke group is aware that the APC primary would be manipulated to favour Hussain."

One of the supporters of Adeleke, who pleaded not to be named,   confirmed this to our correspondent on the telephone.

He, however, said the camp was waiting for the PDP to break the news.

Adeleke could not be reached as calls placed to his telephone indicated that the line had been switched off.

His media aide, Mr. Olumide Lawal, did not pick the call placed to his telephone to confirm or deny the insinuation.

But the Chairman of the PDP in Osun State, Soji Adagunodo, confirmed the defection of Adeleke to the PDP via a text message to our correspondent.

The Secretary, Adeleke Support Group, Alhaji Saheed Afolabi, who is a chieftain of the APC, said Adeleke had picked the PDP nomination form to contest the primary expected to hold on Wednesday.

He said, "Otunba Ademola Adeleke has picked the PDP nomination form. You will see him at the PDP primary election tomorrow. He is only going for affirmation because the PDP has talked to their aspirants and they have all agreed that Ademola Adeleke should be given the ticket."

The APC Screening Committee disqualified Senator Mudashiru Hussain, the Appeal Committee disqualified him but the NWC, after an intervention by some powerful persons, manipulated the whole thing and overturned it. We know what they mean but we are also ready for them.

"The entire people of the Osun-West senatorial district are solidly behind Ademola Adeleke. They cannot stop him and he is going to win this election. Our appeal to INEC and the acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, is that they should not allow the desperate APC leaders in Osun State to use them to rig the election."

Fayose didn’t receive any request from Moji Olaiya’s family –Aide

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti  State has denied the news that he rejected the plea to help fund the repatriation of the remains of Moji Olaiya, the veteran Nollywood actress who died in Canada on May 17.

This was made known in a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka.

The statement said the claim that Fayose refused to financially support the repatriation of the actress's body to Nigeria was not true.

Olayinka in the statement said there was no communication between his office and Olaiya's family, except for a phone call by a journalist.

The statement read, "On Thursday, last week, I was contacted on phone by a journalist friend (name withheld) on the need for the Ekiti State Government to assist in raising a sum of $15,000 needed to bring Moji Olaiya's corpse to Nigeria.

"My immediate response was that an official request, via a letter, should be made and that the letter will be presented to the governor. I gave him my email address to which I said the letter should be sent.

"On Friday, I informed the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Dipo Anisulowo, of my telephone conversation with (the journalist) and my response that official letter should be written to the governor.

"Up till today, the letter has not been sent and as such, no official request has been made to the state government.

"When my attention was drawn to online publications that Governor Fayose had refused to fund the flying of the deceased to Nigeria, I called the journalist who did the report and told him pointedly that no such decision was taken by the governor.

"It was on the strength of this that (the journalist) issued a press statement on behalf of the Burial Committee, stating that no request had been made to the government of Ekiti State and the official letter requested was yet to be sent.

"It, therefore, beats our imagination that certain character (name withheld) could take to the online media to make derogatory comments on the governor, purportedly on behalf of the family.

"While we condole with the Olaiya family of Ijesha Isu Ekiti, Moji Olaiya's friends, fans and colleagues in the movie industry, we wish to advise that the family should saddle only responsible people with the task of according their daughter a befitting burial."

Drop your crown & pursue politics - Afenifere reacts to Oba of Lagos anti-Igbo comments

Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere has called on the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu to drop his crown and pursue politics following his recent anti-igbo remarks. Spokesperson of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin spoke to Vanguard about the position of the group;

"We say with all sense of responsibility that if these were truly the words of Kabiyesi, he has clearly crossed the line of royal decency, desecrated the royal stool and violated the electoral laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and engaged in promotion of hate speech capable of fueling ethnic tension and clashes which are against the spirit of peaceful co-existence which we have achieved in recent years.
We respect the right of Oba Akiolu to drop the crown at Iga and become Director of Mobilisation for the leader of his party if he so desires, but we detest his hiding behind the throne to fan the embers of disunity which could put Yoruba people in harm's way wherever they are living as settlers. Yoruba people are too civilized to support the primitive intimidation of fellow Nigerians just as we will not accept such action being visited on our people in any part of Nigeria." he said

President Jonathan warns against negative triumphalism

Read the State House press statement below...

As the nation prepares for Saturday's governorship and State Assembly elections, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan calls on all Nigerians to remain peaceful, united and law-abiding. The President condemns the very unseemly attempt by some politicians, groups and individuals to intimidate others, heat up the polity and cause public disorder and disaffection in the aftermath of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

President Jonathan is especially concerned about the negative triumphalism that has been put on display by certain elements since March 31 which flies in the face of his personal commitment to post-election peace, unity and national stability.

The President calls on all those, who through their actions and utterances, have been promoting divisiveness, sectionalism and ethnic hatred in the country following the outcome of the March 28 elections to cease and desist from actions that detract from the true spirit and culture of democracy envisioned by patriotic men and women of goodwill in Nigeria.

President Jonathan also condemns the undue harassment of public officials serving under his administration and urges all affected persons to continue to perform their lawful duties without fear. The President cautions that this should be a time for the healing of political wounds in the overriding interest of national unity, stability and progress, not a time for ethnic jingoism and the settling of scores. The Federal Government will not condone any attempt to instigate a crisis in any part of the country in furtherance of personal political ambitions.

President Jonathan assures all Nigerians that his administration remains fully committed to national progress and the entrenchment of the best values of democracy for the good of all Nigerians. He urges Nigerians to go out en-masse once again on April 11 to vote for candidates of their choice in the Governorship and State Assembly elections with the confidence that his administration will do all within its powers to ensure that they do so in peace, without threats, intimidation or violence from any quarters.
