The organizers of the Academy Awards have sued the family of one of its past winners, Joseph Wright, for allegedly selling the Oscar statuette.
The Hollywood Reporter says the suit was filed on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 in a Los Angeles Superior Court.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, organizers of the awards, allege that the Wrights gave Briarbrook Auctions the permission to sell the statue for N13m. This, they say violates the academy's bylaws which prohibits its winners from selling the statues without first offering the Academy a right of first refusal.
Wright won the Oscar in 1942 for his work on color and art direction for the musical My Gal Sal which starred Rita Hayworth.
