A Zuba Upper Area Court on Thursday sentenced Ismaila Musa, of no fixed address, to 19 months in prison for beating up a police officer.
Musa is facing four-count charge of screening an offender, obstructing a police officer from carrying out his work, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
Malam Aminu Sa'ad, the presiding judge, sentenced Musa after he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
Sa'ad, however, gave the convict an option of N75,000 fine.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Haruna Danlami, told the court that on April 2, a police officer was sent to Zuba fruit market, Abuja, on inquiry.
Danlami said that when the officer got to the market, he arrested two suspects, along with the exhibit of their offence, and charged them with theft.
He alleged that on their way back to the station, the convict attacked the police man and set the other suspect free in the process and escaped with the exhibit.
Danlami also told the court that Musa deceived one Cpl. Yonana Moses to come and arrest a suspect that escaped from his custody.
He said that on reaching there, the convict, along with some boys, beat up the officer.
The prosecutor told the court that the offences contravened the Penal Code.
