In defence of Waconzy’s views on ‘disposable music’

Over the weekend, Pop singer Waconzy expressed his
thoughts on the current trend of music making citing
Davido and Olamide as artistes who don't make 'the right
kind of music'. The Port Harcourt-raised singer's comments
have been met with negative reactions with Davido taking
him to the cleaners. But was Waconzy's statement
misinterpreted?
The 'Celebrate' singer who was Ebuka's guest on Rubbin'
Minds was apparently exuberant as the interview showed.
But was his opinion about making Nigerian music balanced
and constructive? YES.
'There are so many songs I see that are hit songs but I don't
really understand. Like Olamide, I don't understand some
of his songs but they are hit songs and I respect him
because he is a hit maker but the truth about it is that I
don't understand a couple of them. A lot of times he's not
really saying anything', Waconzy said about
rapper Olamide citing language barrier as a problem
(Olamide mostly raps in Yoruba language).
About Davido he said 'Like this 'Skelewu' song, God know
I don't really understand any part of the verse but I like the
song but he's not really passing any message. For me, it's
not music, it's a hit song but it's not music'.
Waconzy also talked about his close buddy Timaya's new
song 'Ukwu' adding it to his list. He later cited the likes of
Waje and Tiwa Savage as very talented acts even though
he is not a core fan of their works. Hetold Ebuka he thinks
the likes of 2face Idibia and Banky W as great acts,
explaining that even though their last albums were not the
best works they've put out in their careers, it would still be
relevant music in years to come.
Davido who's known to fire back at anyone who critiques
his music (or leaves him out of any list) fired back at
Waconzy on Twitter; 'Eyaa u dey vex bcus i no allow you
enter my house balu!!!!! ur last hit was when i was in SS2
….. BALU!' and later added 'Wackonzy, 0 brain'.
So what exactly did Waconzy do wrong: expressing a
honest (and balanced) opinion or describing Tonto Dike as
a great actress but noise maker when it comes to her music?
or perhaps calling Olamide and Davido 'these children'?
Commendably, the singer mentioned one of his own old
songs 'Chuku chuku' as also being 'disposable music' just
like Davido's 'Skelewu'.
In defense of disposable music, however, many argue that
for every Mozart orchestration there's a Terry G song with
the just the same number of fans. Maybe Even more.
