A Yaba Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded a
56-year-old man, Monday Akpan, for alleged rape on a
minor.
Akpan, who resides at No. 14 Omoalade Alafia St., Pedro in
Shomolu, Lagos is standing trial on two-count charge of
conspiracy and child rape.
Counsel to the accused Emmanuel Bassey, informed the court
that he had filed a bail application on behalf of his client.
Bassey pleaded with the court to grant Akpan bail on liberal
terms.
The Magistrate, Motolani Ladipo, however, reserved ruling on
the bail application till Dec. 9.
Earlier the Prosecutor, Insp Peter Nwangwu, told the court
that Akpan committed the offence on Nov. 18 and Nov. 26.
He said the accused took advantage of the 13-year-old girl
who had asked him for money.
"Akpan on Nov. 18 and Nov. 26 had sexual intercourse with
the 13-year-old in his room after promising to give her
money.
"He also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it," the
prosecutor said.
Nwangwu said that one of Akpan's co-tenants hinted the
guardian of the young girl that he suspected immoral
relationship between the accused and the girl, after which the
case was investigated and reported to the police.
Akpan, however, denied the charges.
The prosecutor explained that the offence contravened
Sections 409 and 137 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos
State, 2011.
