Ekiti 2014: ‘Fayose’ll restore PDP’s lost glory’

Wole Ayeni, is the National Coordinator, Newbreed Politicians and Coordinator Save Ekiti 2014. In this interview with GBENGA OLUMIDE, he speaks about the governorship election coming on August 21, among other issues.

What is the development in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as regard its flag bearer.

The development is that a primary election was conducted in accordance with the party constitution, supervised by a delegation from the National Headquarters of our party and the State Working Committee (SWC) monitored by INEC, SSS, police and independent observers where a winner emerged and a certificate of return issued by the National Working Committee of the party. So far, that is the development and as loyal party members, we are standing by the outcome of the primaries.

It is not new that some aspirants are not happy or comfortable with the outcome of the election for one reason or the other. But let me assure you that the party will not fold its arm and watch as if they are not important. The candidate also is an experienced politician, he has been stretching his hands of fellowship to them. I can assure you that in due course, the issue will be resolved because the PDP is one big family.

Governor Kayode Fayemi had accused President Goodluck Jonathan of imposing Fayose on the PDP as its candidate. How do you react to this?

It is not only a laughable and ridiculous allegation from the APC government. What is their problem and interest in our party. When Senator Bola Tinubu and Chief Niyi Adebayo imposed Fayemi on AC in 2007, the PDP was not bothered. When Adebayo single handedly endorsed Fayemi for second term in 2013 and schemed out Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB) from participating in any primary we were less concerned because it was none of our business. So, why are they now crying more than the bereaved? It shows that with Fayose as the PDP flag bearer, APC had clearly conceded defeat in the June 21 governorship election.

It was also reported that the Ekiti State government said that Jonathan should be held responsible for any violence in Ekiti State. Is your candidate a violent character?

These are indications of a sinking APC government in Ekiti. Fayose is a grassroot mobiliser and a politician per excellence, and who has a vision. They are just trying to call a dog a bad name in order to hang it. When they were all on their kneels during the 2009 re-run election begging Fayose to support Fayemi, then he was not a violent man. Now that he has come to reclaim power from them and restore the PDP lost glory, they are calling him names. However, Ekiti people know who to hold responsible for the violence that resulted in the death of Murphy Jeje and Madam Julianah Adewumi in Erijiyan. The people of the state also know the violence that resulted in the death of Funsho Ogundare at Emure-Ekiti. The November 2010 violence that resulted in the death of Awolumate in Osan-Ekiti is still fresh in our memory and the Ekiti people will still ask questions.

Giving the great strides by the state in recent time, do you think your party can deliver?

By the special grace of God, on June 21, 2014, Ekiti people would bidding good bye to the APC government. I don't want to say more than that for now.

Some people still argue that Fayose is not the best material for your party now. Do you share this opinion?

I think such people are still living in the past. There was jubilation on the street of Ado-Ekiti the state capital and in all the nooks and crannies of the state immediately Fayose was declared the winner of the primaries. It was enough attestation to the fact that Fayose is a man of the people. You can see that the PDP candidate is divinely anointed. We shall not leave any stone unturned to market a well known product to the Ekiti electorate. So, we have a good material to showcase.

How do you invite your members to win the election?

I'm proud of Ekiti PDP members. Since we lost power to the opposition APC in the year 2010, our people have remained committed and loyal to the party. The numbers defectors to any other party is almost insignificant. Members of the APC joining us on daily basis. Now that the coast is apparently clear for us to take government back, I know our members will put personal interests aside and come together to fight common enemy which is the APC government.
