18-yr-old Scavenger Sentenced To 18-months Imprisonment

1 Area Court, sitting in Kado on Tuesday sentenced a
scavenger,Yakubu Jibril, 18, to eight months in prison for
vandalism.

He was arraigned for joint act, criminal trespass and theft.
The Presiding Judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, sentenced the
convict without an option to pay a fine after he pleaded
guilty.

Ado, however, gave the convict an option to pay nine
thousand naira.

"The punishment is to make you change your lifestyle from
that of crime to being a good citizen," he stated.
Earlier the Prosecutor, Mr Simon Ibrahim, told the court
that the convict and one other, now at large, trespassed into
Globacom Communication Company Ltd and vandalised
water pumping machine.

Ibrahim said that one Tosin Adiel, a security guard attached
to the company in Wuse 2, Abuja reported the matter to the
Utako Police Station on Jan. 30.

After the convict's guilty plea, the prosecutor prayed the
court to summarily sentence him under Section 157 (1) of
the Criminal Procedure Code.

The section states that "if an accused admits that he has
committed the offence of which he is accused, his
admission shall be recorded. It adds that this must "be
nearly as possible, in the words used by the accused and if
he shows no sufficient cause why he should not be
convicted, the court may convict him accordingly''.

He said the offence contravened the provision of Sections
79, 287 and 427 of the Penal Code.
