Former President Goodluck Jonathan Gets International Appointment

Goodluck Jonathan, the Former President of Nigeria, has been appointed as the Chairman of the African Union's International Summit Council for Peace, ISCP.

Speaking at the International Leadership Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he emerged as the chairperson of the newly inaugurated ISCP, a body made up of mainly African former Presidents and ex-Heads of State, Jonathan urged the AU to set minimum acceptable standards for appointing the leadership of electoral commissions.

The two-day conference tagged 'Africa Summit and Leaders Conference 2019' has in attendance government officials, former African Heads of State, clergy and traditional rulers from across Africa.

In a keynote speech titled 'The Need for Good Governance and Peaceful Electioneering Process in Africa, former President Jonathan noted that the credibility and legitimacy of electoral processes are hugely dependent on the competence, impartiality and independence of electoral management bodies (EMBs).

"The AU should, through its Political Affairs Department, set up a team of electoral experts to study different models and recommend the system they consider best for the continent.

"Such benchmark should also take cognizance of the need to review the election of judicial processes to ensure that, where election tribunals are set up to specifically handle election cases, one judicial officer do not handle the role of appointing all members of the tribunals.

"Since neutrality of the security services is absolutely necessary in ensuring free and fair elections, it is also important that the Africa Union should establish a code of conduct guiding security officials in charge of elections. All these recommendations should be accommodated in AU's procedures for elections that should serve as guidelines for election observers."

"Once you get to that point where all role players in elections can express confidence in the umpire and the security systems, you would have solved more than 70% of your electoral challenges. Sadly, not many African countries have got to this point. The point where they can beat their chest and boast of political freedom, inclusiveness, independence of the electoral management body and credibility of the political process," he added.

I’ll pray if any of my children wants to sing secular songs – Bisi Alawiye

Ademola Olonilua and Timileyin Akinkahunsi

Gospel musician, Bisi Alawiye, has said that her dream was to become an accountant but along the line, music 'found' her. She described it as the manifestation of the purpose of God in her life.

The songstress also praised her husband for always being in support of her career, even before they got married.

"I released my first song before I got married; my husband understands my profession very well. We met each other while we were still in the university but at that time; even though I was a chorister, I didn't think I would go into the music industry because I studied accounting and dreamt of being an accountant after school, but God's ways are not our ways. I believe in predestination," she told Saturday Beats.

Asked about the possibility of any of her children following her career path in music, Alawiye noted that was one of her wishes in life.

"I still pray that one of my children will take after me; even if they decide to go into secular music, I'll simply pray for them for God to lead them and guide them spiritually. There are many secular artistes today that are making waves in their own way," she added.

Speaking about her upcoming programme , Oluwashindara Mega Concert,  centred on prayer, she said it has been a blessing to people who have participated in it in the past.

Why does the Queen have two birthdays every year? As monarch celebrates official birthday

The Queen's birthday is celebrated twice a year, once on her actual day of birth and on another occasion in June – but why?

Today is Queen Elizabeth II 's official birthday, which is marked by a military celebration in London known as Trooping the Colour.

But the monarch is lucky enough to have two full days dedicated to her every year.

One day is her actual birthday, and the second day is the official ceremony in June.

Queen Elizabeth was born on April 21 in 1926, and this year marked her 93rd birthday.

This day is usually a low-key event where the Queen will celebrate with her nearest and dearest.

It will usually be marked by a gun salute at midday, 41 in Hyde Park, 21 in Windsor Great Park and 62 at the Tower of London.

But today is her ceremonial birthday, which is always marked on the second Saturday in June.

This is a public celebration where everyone is invited to celebrate with a horse procession in central London and a fly-past over Buckingham Palace.

This year it falls today, Saturday, June 8.

OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY: Trooping the colour is the Queen's official birthday (Pic: GETTY)

Why does the Queen have two birthdays?

The reason for the Queen having two birthdays is actually quite simple – it's to do with British weather.

The tradition of the British monarch celebrating two birthdays has been in place since 1748, during the reign of King George II.

The then-monarch was born in November, but he hated celebrating his big day when it was cold and wet.

King George wanted it to be for the British public to come outside, enjoy the day and have a big celebration.

WEATHER: The official birthday is held because of the nicer weather (Pic: GETTY)

In 1748 he took matters into his own hands, combining his birthday with the annual Trooping of the Colour parade.

This always took place in June, which is less risky in terms of weather in the UK.

Trooping the Colour was originally a parade to help soldiers familiarise themselves with the colours of the regiment flags.

Edward VII also had a November birthday, and became the first monarch to standardise Trooping the Colour as an official birthday celebration.

But now it is combined with the Queen's birthday, and is actually known as The Queen's Birthday Parade.

She initially held the celebration on the second Thursday of June, the same day as her father, King George VI.

However, in 1959, seven years into her reign, she changed it to the current day.

TSTV UPDATE: TStv to commence commercial roll-out November 1st

New PayTV operator, Telecom Satellite Television, TSTV, weekend, disclosed that it would commence commercial roll-out of its decoders to Nigeria by November 1, 2017.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Bright Echefu, said the company would from Monday, deploy about 5,000 decoders to customers for free, and would also be installed for the customers to enable them test the reception, services and claims of the company.

He explained that the delay in the commercial deployment of decoders to customers was to prevent sabotage by unscrupulous elements who would want to frustrate the company.

He said, "We have not commenced commercial sales of our decoders because we are aware of the fact that we are running a business easily frustrated by competition.

"We had applications from over 3,000 individuals who want to be our dealers, so far we have cleared about 750 of the dealers. We are currently conducting due diligence checks on our dealers. We do not want a situation where individuals posing as dealers buy up our decoders and go dump them somewhere."

He said within the next two weeks, the verification and full accreditation of dealers would be completed and the decoders would be rolled out.

…Details later.

Top Government Officials Are “Stealing” To Aid Buhari’s Second Term – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday, alleged that top government officials are "stealing" public funds so as to aid President Muhammadu Buhari's 2019 campaign.

The PDP specifically pointed to the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, and the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru as being involved.

‎Addressing a news conference at the Wadata Plaza in Abuja, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, demanded that Buhari should prove them wrong by giving an order to the anti-graft agencies to immediately launch investigation into the $25 billion scandal involving Baru in the NNPC.

‎The PDP also demanded that Baru be suspended while others, who might have participated in the alleged act be investigated.

The PDP said it suspected that powerful people in the corridors of power were "tacitly involved in the scandal rocking the NNPC."

Adeyeye said, "If the president's powerful Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, could sit on the NNPC board and such a calamity is taking place without an eyelid being blinked,

we are forced to believe that the stealing is being done to the advantage of the president who has shown by his body language, that the only thing that matters most to him for now, is his second term ambition.

‎"Will it be considered a hate speech if we say the money being ‎stolen by President Buhari is being kept aside into a special pool for the prosecution of his second term ambition?

"We challenge the president to prove us wrong by allowing his allies being caught up in acts of brazen stealing of our commonwealth get punished in accordance with the laws of the land. Anything aside this, we will take as confirmation of our suspicion that the rot is from the very top.

"The allegations raised by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources is a confirmation of our earlier stance that the APC administration is in tatters, an administration without coordination, but one planted firmly in the hands of a few cabal who are stealing the nation dry while the president continues to feign ignorance of the sickening stench," he said.

"The sum involved in the NNPC scandal is $25bn: less than 10 per cent of that ($2bn) is involved in the so called arms fund allegedly converted by the former NSA, for which hundreds of Nigerians have been arrested and hounded," he added.

But APC's National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi has condemned the allegation and tasked PDP to provide proof.

"What I can tell you is that they don't have any evidence to support what they are saying. Has the president said he wants to contest in 2019? So, what they are saying is unwarranted. They are just trading by vendetta and nothing more."

Lai Mohammed & Governor Ben Ayade Commission First Decoder Manufacturing Plant In West Africa. (See Photos)

The first surface mount technology (SMT) digital set top box manufacturing plant in West Africa has commence production in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The plant, operated by Gospell Digital Technology was commissioned today Thursday by Cross River Governor, Senator Ben Ayade who said the state will partner the company to ensure it breaks the difficult terrain to ensure broadcasting is made easier and information delivered more efficiently.

"We have very difficult terrain in Cross River and it is very difficult to transmit," Ayade said, adding that: "We will on proper negotiation, be placing an order today for 5,000 set top boxes."

Mr. Ayade said the smart city project of the state which is nearing completion will provide a backbone for a smart technology integration and disclosed that the installation of hotspots for the 12 Kilometer Carnival Calabar route has been completed.

On local content, the Governor said that: "Most importantly we will like to see technology transfer," and promised that the state aside given tax incentives will purchase 10 STBs for every Cross Riverian employed by the company.

He said that he hoped the country will be able to wholly own and operate a technology center and maintained that the breakthrough by Gospell technology starts "the journey towards decoupling the black man from depending on the white man."

The Chairman of the company, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa in his remarks commended the federal government for it's "thorough" planning and implementation of the digital switchover system and said it was the reason all were gathered there.

"We are here because at some point in the history of this country, the country decided to digitalize and move away from analogue practices especially in the area of communication," he said.

He continued: "The government was thorough in planning the switchover ensuring that every stakeholder played a role."

Mr. Ohuabunwa said the company decided to participate in the provision of set top boxes and disclosed that the company has set up two factories in Calabar.

"We have two factories here, a factory to assembly and a factory to produce as part of its backward integration," said Mr. Samuel who also disclosed the company plans to go into everything electronic using indigenous technology.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced April and September 2018 dates for governorship polls in Ekiti and Osun states.

The tenure of Ekiti incumbent governor, Ayodele Fayose and his Osun state counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola would end on Oct 15, 2018 and November 28, 2018, respectively.

According to the timetable released on Thursday in Abuja by the electoral body, the Ekiti and Osun elections would hold on July 14th and September 22, 2018, respectively.

Based on the timetable any run off election would be held within seven days after the announcement of result in line with relevant laws.

The timetable for the polls was signed by the Commission's secretary, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu. According to the timetable, INEC is expected to issue notice for the Ekiti election on April 4, 2018, which is not later than 90 days before the election.

Political campaigns would commence on April 15 while collection of forms by political parties for issuance to candidates would come a day after.

Political primaries and resolution of disputes arising from such was slated for 15April-14 May, 2018.

Notice of election was fixed for 23rd June 2018while campaign for the Osun state government house would start on June 25, 2018.

Collection of forms for the Osun election has been fixed for June 25th, while primaries and resolution of arising disputes must be conducted between June 24- July 23rd, 2018.

Speaking on the dates, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Prince Solomon Soyebi said INEC was guided by the provisions of section 178(1)and (2) of the 1999 constitutionas amended, and section 25(7) and (cool of the electoral Act,2010 in arriving at the dates.

He also restated the Commission's earlier warning to intending aspirants and their parties that the release of dates for elections did not amount to notice for campaigns for votes. He further warned that parties which infringed on provisions of the Electoral Act as amended would be sanctioned.

"Anybody who deviates from the Electoral guidelines by engaging in public campaign ahead of the date for commencement of campaign is committing electoral offence and will be prosecuted.

"All political parties and their candidates are hereby enjoined to cooperate with us," Soyebi said.

Fresh Arrests Loom In INEC As EFCC Probes 20 States

The South-South geopolitical zone has recorded the highest number of people who took part in the Continuous Voter Registration between the months of April and September 2017.

This is according to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who also disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was already probing the commission's officials in 20 states over alleged electoral fraud.

He said this during a quarterly consultative meeting with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

Regarding the prosecution and probe of 205 of its officials for allegedly receiving part of the N23bn reportedly disbursed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani-Alison Madueke, the INEC boss said he would continue to cooperate with the EFCC.

Yakubu said the last report given to him by the EFCC involved 16 states. He said the EFCC was already probing INEC officials in 20 other states

He said, "I want to say that this is the first time in the history of our elections that in one fell swoop, 205 officials were disciplined based on the interim report we received from the EFCC covering 16 states.

"Under the terms and conditions of service what we can do is to interdict them which means placing them on half salary and suspending them from work until their innocence or guilt is established. The last report covered 16 states and only last week I heard they had started prosecuting them.

"However, after receiving the report, we had a discussion with the EFCC and told them that for the outstanding 20 states, they should not submit any interim report to INEC but just prosecute them.

"Once they are taken to court, we activate the provisions of the terms and conditions of service. Whatever we need to do we will do even if it means getting rid of everybody in the commission and recruiting afresh for the purpose of the 2019 elections. We are committed to doing so."

Giving a breakdown of the Continuous Voter Registration conducted between April and September 2017, the INEC boss said about 667, 103 persons registered to vote in the South-South geopolitical zone. The zone comprises Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers states.

The South-West came in second with 532,172 persons registered to vote while the North-West, which has seven states, had a combined 477, 056 registered voters.

The North-Central came in fourth with 374, 923 while the South-East which has five states recorded 352,942 voters.

In the North-East, 350,398 registered within the same period.

Rivers State recorded the highest number of registered voters at 151, 398 while Lagos came second with 144, 076. Ondo recorded the lowest number with 29, 766.

In total, about 2, 786, 405 persons registered to vote between  April and September. However, only 108, 752 had come forward to claim their cards.

Yakubu said eight million voter cards remain unclaimed.

Yakubu lamented that out of the eight million PVCs were unclaimed nationwide, Lagos accounted for about one million.

He said, "Some of you will also recall that Lagos has recorded the least collection of PVCs not in terms of numbers but in relation to the numbers that registered. Out of the eight plus million PVCs still uncollected nationwide, over a million are uncollected in Lagos."

The INEC boss said the voter apathy in Lagos was worrisome as various strategies employed by INEC seemed not to be working.

He said the last two by-elections in Lagos had recorded very low turnout.

The INEC chairman said the commission was ready for the Anambra governorship election which comes up next month.

He said over 6,000 smartcard readers would be used for the election

The INEC boss said the commission would not be discouraged by the legal obstacles it was facing in the process of recalling the Kogi-West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye.

Yakubu said constituents had the right to recall anybody they wanted to in a democracy.

The INEC boss also warned politicians seeking to run in 2018 and 2019 to stop campaigning as this was in contravention of the Electoral Act

TSTV:  See What Nigerians are saying

The launch of a new satellite television, TSTV has been welcomed by many Nigerians who took to their social media platforms to celebrate the new provider.

While celebrating the new provider, they mocked DSTV and other cable service providers saying that TSTV has brought very good competition that would put them on their toes.

Many of the Nigerians who alleged exploitation by existing satellite TV providers said that TSTV has affordable rates and better offers.

TSTV among other things, promises to offer pay-per-view, affordable subscription rates with daily subscription available as well as a 20gb free data all for a N5,000 decoder and maximum monthly subscription of N3,000.

Long before it was launched on Oct. 1, many Nigerians had treated the news of its coming with much anticipation. Many believe the coming of TSTV will break the control of DSTV.

On twitter, TSTV trended with over 26,000 mentions as at the time of this report.

Some of the Nigerians who expressed their views on their Twitter handle said that the launch of TSTV which coincided with the nation's independence day celebration, meant satellite TV independence for Nigerians.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has granted TSTV tax free operation for three years as a way of encouraging the company.

TStv is the latest Pay TV service in Nigeria. Launching on October 1, 2017, TStv is promising loads of new value added services that are already exciting consumers in Nigeria. Some of the perks include the ability to pause your subscription for up to 7 days in a month, PVR feature with up to 500GB built-in storage, Video on Demand, Video Calls, and free 20GB data. Satellite Dish Required

TStv is a satellite Direct to Home (DTH) Pay TV service just like DSTV. This means you will need to install a satellite dish for your system. According to information on the company's website, your dish should be pointing to the ABS 3A satellite located at 3 degrees west.

You also require a set top box (decoder). The good news is that the dish and the decoder will cost just 5,000 Naira, making it affordable for a lot more Nigerians.

The TStv Set Top Box

The set top box (decoder) by TStv is the most versatile so far in the industry. This decoder uses the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HBB TV) tech to deliver high quality entertainment to your home. The decoder also comes with a PVR feature that enables you pause and rewind live TV. With its 500GB built-in storage you can store a whole lot of content for future viewing.
