Pastor Charges Money From Members To Check If Their Names Are In The Book Of Life (Photo)

A pastor who heads Helicopter of Christ Ministries in Kenya
has been accused of charging people money to check if their
names are in the book of life, a Kenyan website reports.
Pastor Wahome charges Sh 1,500 (2,848.46 NGN) from
anyone who wants to know about this mystery. This is not the
first time the pastor will be accused of fooling his church
members and the public, as he also did something similar in
2012. In 2012, the pastor wore a particular garment and said
whoever touched it will be healed of any sickness just like the
woman with the issue of blood, in Mark 5:21-34 who got
healed after touching the garment of Jesus. He also charged
Sh 1,200( 2,278.77 NGN) for this. Shockingly a lot of people
flooded his church to receive their supposed healing and are
still running there to see if their names are in the book of life.

Adedibu’s son, 30 others escape death in near plane crash in Abuja

31 passengers, including the son of late Ibadan politician,
Lamidi Adedibu, Sen Kamoru Adedibu, escaped death
yesterday after an Overland Airlines aircraft they boarded
caught fire shortly before take off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport, Abuja yesterday.

Saturday Tribune reports that the plane, scheduled for Ibadan
from Abuja at 4:52p.m. was about to take off when it started
emitting smoke from one of its engines.

One of the passengers who spoke with Saturday Tribune
said the about 31 passengers of the plane were already
seated before the incident.

"We first observed that engineers were frantically fiddling
with the plane's engine. Then we suddenly saw smoke. It
is not funny at all. All of us, including a senator, rushed
out of the plane. Continue...

"We were subsequently evacuated by airport officials. As
I am speaking with you now (8:30p.m.), we are waiting
for another plane from Ilorin, which we have been
promised will take us to Ibadan. We thank God," she said.

Senator Adedibu described the incident as a horrible
experience but thanked God that it did not happen mid-air.

He commended the pilot, the crew and airport officials for
being observant and for the prompt rescue operation. He
also confirmed that all the passengers were still at the
Abuja airport at 8:45p.m. when Saturday Tribune spoke
with him.

OpenTable launches pilot mobile payment program in San Francisco

Soon you'll be able to use OpenTable to not only book
your restaurant reservation, but pay for your meal as
well. As rumored last year, the program is currently
being tested at new diners and restaurants in San
Francisco area, with plans to expand to new eateries
and locations in the future. Similar to how PayPal
allows you to pay at restaurants by having you check in
when you arrive, OpenTable treats your reservation as a
check-in of sorts. Paying for your night out with the app
involves simply adding a credit card before your eat.

When you're done with dessert, you can view your
check and complete the transaction on your phone
without having to get a bill from your waiter, freeing
you up to head on to your next adventure that much
faster. With any luck, additional tester tables will open
up soon -- the company says it plans to let users request
access to the pilot program in the near future.

Google refuses to pay French privacy fine, forced to post admission of guilt (update)

France and Google are playing a delicate game of
brinkmanship in the courts of Europe, and it still isn't
clear who'll come off worse. France fined the search
company €150,000 ($200,000) last month as a penalty
for failing to tell French citizens exactly what happens
to their personal data. Google could have coughed up
the trivial sum and drowned its sorrows in a bottle of
beaujolais, but instead it has decided to fight -- not
because of the money, but because accepting the fine
would have also involved making a public admission of
guilt (published below the search button in a size 13
font, no less) and the company feels this would have
"irreparably damaged" its reputation.

Google's legal appeal against the fine appears to rest on
creating a rift between France and the European Union,
because it claims its privacy policy meets EU
requirements and shouldn't have to be amended to suit
one European country. (Although, to be fair, many
other European countries have also complained about
it.) So, here's the risk: What is currently a dispute over
fines and typefaces could theoretically -- in the worst
case scenario -- escalate into another international court
case that runs on for years, or it could even become a
question of sovereignty that risks causing France to lose
face. Some of this is doomsday-ish speculation on our
part admittedly, but Google's well-funded legal
department doesn't look ready to quit any time soon.
Update: Well, that didn't last long -- a French court has
already rejected Google's appeal, telling the search
giant that it failed to show that the original order was
illegal, at risk to the public interest or that it would
cause permanent damage to Mountain View's financial
interests. Google can still appeal the fine, but it's been
forced to post a public admission of guilt on the
Google.fr homepage, read on for a translated version.

A special branch of the CNIL has fined
Google 150,000 euros for breaking the laws
of "information technology and liberty." See

Samsung's new Windows Phone for Verizon reaches the FCC

Just in case it wasn't already clear that Samsung is
prepping a next-generation Windows Phone for
Verizon, the company has just passed the device (the
SM-W750V) through the FCC. The approval confirms
the presence of Big Red-friendly LTE and CDMA
frequencies, as well as GSM and HSPA for world
roaming. The handset is also large enough to hold that
rumored 5-inch screen. The filing doesn't offer any
clues as to when the hardware ships, but we wouldn't
rule out the possibility of an announcement at or around
Mobile World Congress.

Google's Field Trip app adds ratings to its recreational recommendations

Google knows that not everything in Field Trip will
reach the high watermark of creepy areas around New
York, but it hopes that the app's latest update will make
cool spots easier to find wherever you are. The search
giant's Niantic Labs has added a rating system on
Android and iOS and is enabling the community to
possibly cull banal info from the mobile point-of-
interest database. The five-star rankings should offer
more granularity than the previous thumbs-ups/thumbs-
down system, and soon enough the cards with the
highest average score could be all you see. If your city
is inherently boring though, there's nothing Mountain
View can do about that.

7 Easy Ways to Spend Quality Time with Yourself

When you're feeling stressed out and want to take a break
from reality, you need to look into some ways to enjoy
quality time with yourself. Between your family, your work
and your home, often you forget to take care of yourself, and
this is one of the worst things you can do. You have to take
care of yourself first. Here are a few ways to enjoy some
quality 'me' time.

1. Have a bath
One of the best ways to enjoy some quality 'me' time is to
have a bath. Fill up your bathtub with warm water, if you like,
add some bubbles or salts, and take a nice soak. To enhance
relaxation, play some soothing music and burn some
aromatherapy candles.

2. Get manicure and pedicure
Getting a mani/pedi is one of the best ways to pamper
yourself. Go to a salon and spend an hour or more having
your toes and your fingers rubbed, polished and moisturized.
You can also have a manicure and pedicure at home.

3. Get a massage
A pedicure and a manicure are great options for spending
some quality 'me' time, but another best way to enjoy some
time alone and get some pampering is by getting a massage. A
massage is something that everybody needs from time to time.
It relieves exhaustion and stress.

4. Take a walk
Go outside on a nice day and enjoy walking alone. Breathe in
the fresh air, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy the beautiful
scenery that surrounds you. A walk will allow you to relax,
clear your mind and listen to the inner you. Walking can have
many therapeutic benefits.

5. Read a book
Can you remember the last time you sat down and read a
book? Reading is one of the best ways to unwind. It's not
only relaxing, but it also allows you to escape everyday
stresses that normally fill your mind. Take a good book and
enjoy some reading time.

6. Go shopping
Pamper yourself to a mini shopping spree. Go to your favorite
store – home goods, clothing, or accessory – and spend some
quality time shopping without worrying about anything or
anyone else. When you shop alone, you can concentrate and
buy the things that you actually want to buy.

7. Enjoy a delicious beverage
Spend some quality 'me' time while enjoying a cup of tea, a
yummy beer or a glass of wine. After you finish your work
for the day and put your children to bed, pour your drink of
choice, put your feet up on a chair and sip yourself to
complete relaxation.

Sometimes we all feel stressed out. What is your favorite way
to spend quality time with yourself? Share your thoughts,
please!

8 Easy Ways to Reach Your Goals

Everyone has goals in their life that they want to achieve, and
there are many ways to do it. I like having goals, ideas and
aspirations, but sometimes I need to get a little bit more
practical when it comes to achieving them. Here are some
easy ways to reach your goals.

1. Lists
I like writing a to-do list. Even the thought of crossing out
things done gets me so excited that I want to achieve more
goals. Make a list of all things that need to be completed to
reach your goals and cross them out as you go. If it's a long
running goal each Saturday or Sunday write a list of what
should be done during the week ahead.

2. Vision board
Another way to reach your goals is to create your own vision
board. Fill it with all things, achievements and experiences
you want and stick it somewhere you will be able to see it
every day. Seeing is believing, girls. Use your vision board as
the technique to reach your goals.

3. Small steps
You might know the end goal, but just the thought of
achieving it can be a little frightening. Don't forget that all big
moves and achievements that have ever taken place are made
up of lots of small steps. Start small, tackle those big daunting
tasks and cope with one small step in the right direction at a
time.

4. Be sure
Before you start achieving your goal, make sure that it's a
realistic goal and it's really what you want. Sometimes we fail
to reach our goals because we lose motivation and steam, this
can happen because it was not something that we really
wanted. Make sure that your goal isn't only achievable, but
that you actually want it.

5. Friends
Recently I recruited my best friend to help me stay on track
with my goal. Each Saturday we meet for coffee and we run
through with what I reached since we last met and what's on
my to-do list for the week ahead. It's a great motivator to
know that someone will be checking over things and a great
excuse to have a good catch-up with your best friend once a
week!

6. Plan
We can't actually get to where we desire to go if we don't
know where we are going. So, one of the most important
ways to reach your goals is to make a plan. Set both short
term and long term goals and check up on yourself regularly
to make sure that you're still on track.

7. Reward
While you're working towards your goals, reward yourself for
making progress along the way. You have to decide when you
will treat yourself. Recently I was working on a big project
and after working hard most evenings I'd treat myself to
brunch on Sunday morning and an absolutely work free
afternoon!

8. The light ahead
If you've ever run a full marathon, you know how great it is
to see a marker every now and again highlighting your
progress and how far you should go until the finish line. Set
yourself goals, mile stones that show you how far you've
come and how far until you've succeeded in achieving your
goals.

Give yourself have a chance and a plan, everything is
possible! Do you know some other ways to reach goals? Share
your thoughts, please!

One of the top ways to live every day with intention is to set

strive to do each day. Eating right and exercising on a regular
basis are vital for every person. Not only will it help keep
extra weight off, but it can reduce risks of disease, boost
mood and clear the mind!

4. Stay in a good mood
Remember the only person who can change your mood is
yourself! Sure, people can support and encourage you, but it's
you who should choose to be vibrant and happy. Don't think
of the things that annoy you or bring you down, instead, focus
on your loved ones, your purpose and goals and always stay
in a good mood!

5. Find balance in your life
Finding balance in your life is another significant aspect of
living with purpose. It's important to work hard, play hard
and, of course, rest well. Work drives your intention, play

You have to manage your time to live with purpose!
Productivity happens when you know how to manage your

to see if your everyday habits are destructive or productive for
reaching your life goals.

Sometimes we forget why we are living and it can be
extremely difficult to get out of bed! Try to live on purpose

8 Most Meaningful Proverbs Everyone Should Live by

Many of us have heard over and over again those proverbs
everyone should live by that are really inspiring. From each
culture and religion, there are plenty of essential proverbs that
speak to the depths of you as a human being and affect how
you think. Sometimes proverbs can be so inspiring that they
even change who you are and how you live your life. If you
want to feel refreshed and inspired, take a look at some great
and incredibly meaningful proverbs everyone should live by!

1. "The purpose of life is a life of purpose" – Robert Byrne
Perhaps, this is my favorite proverb, because there was a time
when I didn't understand what the purpose of my life was. I
think at some point every one of us comes to that difficult
question of what the purpose of life is. The answer is actually
different for everybody and some people may not know it yet
and that's not bad. The basic point of this great proverb is to
live your life with purpose in all your thoughts and actions,
which is actually everybody's calling, regardless of passions
and talents. I have this wonderful and meaningful proverb on
my wall and it really helps me through difficult times!

2. "In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down
while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a
foothold" – Eph. 4:26-27
I always think of this proverb when I'm in a fight with a
family member, partner or friend. While being angry is
normal and even healthy, we should not be consumed by
anger and it must not still be there the next day. If you are
consumed by anger over a disagreement or fight, you can
easily say or do something you will regret later. So calm
yourself by taking a few deep breaths and try to resolve the
issues without fighting. Remember you and only you are
responsible for your actions so do your part to stay cool, calm
and collected!

3. "A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything
and the value of nothing" – Oscar Wilde
Though I try not to be a cynic person, with all the selfishness
abounding in our world it's extremely difficult not to be
cynical. I believe that there are many selfless and kind people
who really make our world a better place to live in! It's an
amazing goal to see the value in those things that are not
fleeting in life, such as love, faith, family, and friends!

4. "Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it " –
Confucius
Have you ever heard the saying 'beauty is in the eye of the
beholder'? I absolutely agree with Confucius. Beauty is
everywhere we just don't notice it at times. Every day try to
see those little things, which are very beautiful. It can be
lunch with your friends and interesting conversation. Sure, it's
the little thing, but it's so beautiful!

5. "No one can make you feel inferior without your
consent" – Eleanor Roosevelt
Often it's extremely difficult to ignore negative words,
especially when they are from someone you love. If it
happens, the best thing to do is to tell the person that it's a
great pity that they have such opinion, and that you are going
to think otherwise. Never dwell on negative words, I know
it's easier said than done, but you should try to do it!

6. "Kindness is the sunshine in which virtue grows" –
Anonymous
I like this proverb because unkind people can't have virtuous
traits. Kindness comes from love, and without love, all
virtuous characteristics are worthless. I believe this is a
beautiful and meaningful proverb everyone should live by!

7. "Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small
spark" – James 3:5
This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. The entire verse
compares the tongue to a big fire and how our words are
powerful and destructive. Every time I read this proverb I
always think of gossips and how they spread like a fire,
consuming people who turn their ears to listen. Gossips can
ruin lives, so we must avoid spreading rumors about other
people, even if they're true. It's just unkind.

8. "The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single
step" – Chinese Proverb
I love this proverb because it's really motivational in all areas
of life. I think about my fitness goal and how the most
difficult part about getting into exercise is just beginning and
taking that first step! The first step is always the most difficult
since it's the mental battle you should overcome.

These are all of my favorite proverbs I live by. I feel really
inspired and refreshed when I read them. I hope you like these
beautiful proverbs and you will take them to heart! What
proverbs do you live by? Please comment below and thanks
for reading!

7 Great Values You Should Live by

Did you know about important values you should live by? If
you want to live life without regrets you need to learn these
values and teach others, especially if you are a parent. As a
mom, I know there are a lot of things I should instill in my
child's heart and mind. There are plenty of good
characteristics, morals, and most important values we all need
to live by and here are a few of them:

1. Appreciation
Appreciation is one of the most important values every person
should live by. Sometimes it can be difficult to show
appreciation, but there are many tips on how to do it. To live
a happy life you should always appreciate what you have.
Using manners and smiling show appreciation. I teach it to
my child – to appreciate everything in life since she is blessed
every day.

2. Respect
Respect is another important value to live by. While I teach
my child to respect everybody, I also teach her to respect
herself first. I believe especially now in our generation it's
vital to teach our kids to respect themselves because when
they respect themselves others respect them too.

3. Faith
Even if you are not religious, having faith is important. For
me and my family faith is very important because we all
believe in God, and when something isn't working out right or
doesn't seem to go our way, we don't forget to have faith.
People who are not religious should have faith in themselves
and in others, and to stay positive no matter what.

4. Honesty
You should be honest not only to others but to yourself as
well. After all, it's great to be honest, and share those feelings
and thoughts. It's being honest to yourself, your belief and
everything you stand for. One of the things to keep in mind
when being honest is to think of other people before yourself.
Often people don't love the truth, which is why you should
always think twice before telling anything.

5. Forgiveness
For me, forgiving is a difficult thing. But I know that it's
important to forgive and move on. Why is it so important?
Negative thoughts can harm your health and make your life
miserable. I personally can forgive, but I can't forget. If you
are like me you should learn to forgive and let go, and never
hold grudges. Your life will be much happier, I promise.

6. Patience
Patience is something that I struggle with every single day.
Being a mom and a woman who is trying to make her career
can be a little overwhelming and I know that I must be more
patient. In fact, teaching patience is a wonderful value. It's
great to know that the best things certainly come to those
wait, you just need to work toward it.

7. Belief
My mom taught me this, and I continue to do it for my
daughter. I really think it's good to believe in other people
and their aspirations. There's nothing better than rooting for
someone you love to achieve their goals. When you believe in
someone, it's a good support for them, remember it.

Now, you see there are a few most important values you and
your family should live by. What are values you and your
family live by? Please share your thoughts in the comments
section.

Skelewu Video: ‘Sesan Didn’t Do What Was Expected From Him’- Davido

When the singer released the song, he tasked his fans to record the 'Skelewu' dance with any device of their choices
and upload such on the internet.

This was exactly what D'Banj did when he released his smash hit single, 'Oliver Twist'.

As expected, many people responded to it and in a short time,
the 'Omo Baba Olowo' announced that he was shooting the
music video of the song.

However, before its official release, the music video, shot by
Sesan, reportedly leaked on the internet, but the video received knocks from fans, who felt disappointed at the work.

As a way of damage control, Davido took to twitter to
dissociate himself from the video and slammed Sesan for the
job.

He thereafter announced that he was contracting UK-based music video director, Moe Musa for another shoot of the song. Though the second job fell below expectation, Davido later gave up on the job after he was slammed by his fans as he was allegedly planning to shoot a third video for the song.

Speaking recently on why he publicly took on Sesan, Davido
declared that he felt bad about what Sesan did because he had
expected much from him.

Corroborating him, his cousin, Shina Rambo, lamented that
Sesan didn't do what was expected from him. He said they
were angry with him (Sesan) because they paid hugely for the
job and thought he would do what would be appreciated by
all.

#TBT: Afroncandy before the nudity and porn movies

Above is a photo of Nollywood actors Judith Opara and Mike Ezuronye back in 2004, way before Opara morphed into AfroCandy.

FYI: Afrocandy is the popular wannabe porn star who gained quite some attention in the last two years for taking her cloths off in several low budget Nigerian home videos.

The actress, last year, reached out to actresses Cossy Orjiakor, Anita Joseph and Uche Obodo, asking them to feature in her porn movies but they all turned down her offer.

You Need To Invests Your Money –Kefee

The singer has said she thinks every musician needs to have
another source of income, especially when they are still young
and so much in the game. According to her, all creative
talents are from God and what we gain from them should be
regarded as gifts; they come free and while we still work hard
to make a living from them, we should also do other things.
I work hard on my music and I earn money from it, but it
does not end there for me. I am very passionate about food
and cooking and that is why I started a restaurant business two
years ago.

They also have to channel the money they have made from
music into another business, by doing that they will have an
insurance and pension for their old age and for their younger
generation. Nothing lasts forever, she said.

Nigerians protest electricity billing system, exorbitant bills

A cross-section of Nigerians on Friday appealed to the
nation's electricity generation and distribution companies to
make energy consumption people-friendly.

They said that their expectations after the unbundling of the
defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have
been dashed following the subsisting "crazy bills and the fixed
rate billing of electricity."

They made their appeals in separate interviews with the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during the National Conscience
Party (NCP's) rally/protest against the management of
electricity providers in Lagos.

Mr Friday Arinze, who resides at Iyana-Ipaja, decried the
what he termed the exorbitant bills of the new energy
providers.

According to him, poor Nigerians who are in their millions,
could not afford such electricity bills.

"The bills that they are giving us now is too exorbitant; they
should allow the power to be regular.

"With the way they are going, the poor will not be able to live
in this country, as the standard of living is becoming
unbearable for the ordinary man," he said.

Mr Jeremiah Olaoye, a businessman, who lives in Ikeja, also
bemoaned the absence electricity supply in his area since
November, 2013.

Olaoye described bills for electricity consumers as outrageous,
adding that the categorisation of consumers was wrong.
"We have not had light in my area since November and at my
shop, they bring us bills of about three thousand, five hundred
Naira?

"I am appealing to them to provide constant electricity and
they also need to reduce the charges; it is unfair," he said.
Mrs Falilat Adeyemi, a businesswoman, urged the new
investors in the nation's energy sector to overhaul their billing
system.

"We want stable power supply because we burn fuel
everyday, thereby wasting money unnecessarily," she said.
Mrs Helen Ogbonnaya, another resident of Mowe-Ibafo
in Ogun State, said that electricity supply had gone from bad
to worse since the new investors took over.

"Sincerely, I will tell you that the electricity situation has
gone from bad to worse. We have not had electricity since late
last year.

"Power was a little bit stable before the new investors took
over, but now, the situation has become very bad again," she
said.

Ogbonnaya also urged the new investors to end "crazy bills
and fixed charges" for those who are not using prepaid
meters.

"We want stable light because it is not easy to buy fuel; do
you know how much my family spends on fuel?

"It is not fair to us in the middle class, if the rich can afford it,
we cannot afford such. They should have a re-think," she said.
NAN reports that the peaceful protest organised by the NCP
started from the Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi's house in Ikeja
to the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
Office in Ikeja.

Dr Yunusa Tanko, NCP National Chairman, presented a
protest letter itemising their grievances to the management of
the NERC.

Tanko said that the bills given to consumers, the payments
they are compelled to make, without light, was unfair to the
masses, saying that the protest was to awaken the
consciousness of the ordinary Nigerian.

"This will also serve as a wake-up call to every Nigerian
because this oppression has to stop," he said.

Mr Austin Okeke, the Assistant Secretary to the Ikeja NERC,
received the letter on behalf of the management. (NAN)

EA Sports' 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil won't be coming to Xbox One or PlayStation 4

As is the case every four years, FIFA's biggest football
competition is about to take place. To celebrate the
2014 tournament, which will be played in Brazil, EA
Sports is releasing a title to give fans a chance to
virtually experience the World Cup on gaming
consoles. While the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil game
will be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, we
were surprised to find out that EA Sports won't be
bringing it to their next-gen revisions, the PlayStation 4
and Xbox One. Here's what the game's Lead Producer,
Mat Prior, told us:

When we made the decision we considered a
number of factors but most importantly we
wanted to create the best game we could that
could reach as many people as possible and
the way to do that was make our best game
yet on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We gave
our team the mandate of setting a laser focus
on building the highest quality game for
X360 and PS3 they could, and that's exactly
what they are doing.

The news will likely disappoint the hardcore football
folk, as they were probably looking forward to playing
this year's World Cup title on their shiny new Xbox
One or PS4. Not all is lost, however: "We will have a
range of engaging content within FIFA 14 Ultimate
Team so that fans on the new generation of consoles
can experience the World Cup in fun and unique ways,"
an EA Sports representative said to Engadget.
Meanwhile, on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, 2014
FIFA World Cup Brazil will be sold as a full,

standalone game in April for $60 -- this is different than
what EA did with UEFA Euro 2012, which was a $20
DLC release through FIFA 12. So, what are your
thoughts? Definitely let us know in the comments

Looking At Me...There’s No Way God Won’t Bless Me With A Rich Man- Chita Agwu

Chita Agwu is a fast rising Nollywood actress who just had
an interview with Vanguard Newspaper where she spoke
about her kind of man, her cars and how she moved from one
apartment to another. Well the part I like most was when the
reporter said, there was a report that she bought a brand new
car after she had an accident at Ijebu ode, and Chita was
quick to correct him that she has actually changed like two
cars after the incident and not one like he thinks, lol. Enjoy
the interview after the cut.

What will it take a man to date you?

There is nothing a man can give to me. I like someone who is
honest and cute, because I don't like ugly guys. If you also
have the fear of God in you, even if you don't have money,
though I know money is important, I would consider. But,
looking at me, there is no way God would not bless me with
someone who has money.

A report said that you bought a brand new car after that
accident you had with your car in Ijebu Ode and that you
have moved to a choice apartment?

I have changed like two cars after the accident I had and they
are all brand new cars. As for the apartment; l had to move
from my old apartment because it became too small for me. I
only moved to a bigger apartment and not to a choice
apartment!

You are very versatile when it comes to dressing, how come
you dress the way you do?

I dress as the spirit leads. When I wake up in the morning, I
just dress the way my mind tells me to. But generally, I am a
tomboy as I love sneakers. My boyfriend buys them for me a
lot.

What would you not be caught wearing?

You can never catch me tying wrapper on my chest. While
growing up, my mum used to advise me a lot on that and she
used to say tying wrapper on the chest will press one's breasts
down.

So did it work for you; I mean your mum's advice on not
tying wrapper over your chest?

I did and it actually worked for me! I am what l am today
because l obeyed my mother's instruction and took that advice
she gave me. And l can say with confidence that when you tie
wrapper over your chest as a woman; the tendency that your
breasts would fall is very high. Many women can also testify
to this also.

Union Bank Lay Off 137, As Sacked Staffers Expose Crisis Afflicting The Bank

Financial Institution, Union Bank just sacked about 137
staffers in a swoop.

And the affected workers have come out to expose internal
crisis threatening the bank's operations.

Here is a reproduction of report trending report detailing the
development.

'Union Bank, on Monday, sacked another 137 staff in
continuation of the ongoing downsizing of its workforce as a
result of the current reform in the banking sector. The
affected staff were disengaged, following Union Bank decision on outstanding disciplinary cases, while some were sanctioned for various acts of misdemeanour.

Meanwhile, the bank has recruited another 150 graduates to
reinvigorate its workforce. The newly employed staff, which
include about 70 of the bank's current temporary/out-sourced
staff, were selected after recruitment procedures and they are
to undergo a five-week induction programme at different
locations across the country.

This will prepare them for the challenges of banking and to
integrate them into the bank's culture of professionalism and
best ethical practices.

The bank had earlier employed 500 fresh graduates as part of
the efforts to regenerate its human capital, while the
management reassured customers and other stakeholders of
its commitment towards positive and progressive
transformation of the bank to maximise the opportunities
presented in the industry.

From my experience as a staff of Union Bank PLC, I think
the following should be added to the several factors that
could cause the fall of a brand:

1. Poor staff welfare

2. Poor or zero capacity building

3. Chauvinistic management

Poor staff welfare – THE UNION BANK CASE

I have always held the notion that if you must kill a
community, you must first kill its core values. The same
thing applies to any organization. There is no need debating
the fact that human resource is one of the core values of any
organization especially in the banking sector.

In the case of Union Bank of Nigeria PLC, its human
resource (staff of the bank) cannot at the moment be
classified as part of the values of the bank putting into
cognizance the bigotry approach in which management of the
bank ensure or provide basic staff welfare.

Health of mind and body they say is wealth. The story is not
the same in Union Bank of Nigeria PLC as far as its staff is
concerned. Instead, health of mind and body is rare to staff
of the bank. There are lots of factors that engender good
health of mind and body; family, finance, positive
endearvours, job satisfaction etc. When all these factors are
mixed in the right proportion, there is bound to be good
health of mind and body. All these factors do not mix well
for current staff of Union Bank of Nigeria PLC no thanks to
poor staff welfare in the bank.

Yes there is the saying that the grass is not green everywhere
but in Union Bank of Nigeria PLC with its current
management and staff welfare, there is no grass at all. When
the current management of the bank was installed by the
Apex bank on August 14th, 2009 took charge of affairs,
there were hopes that the new management will help fast
track the change project that was started before they came on
board. Part of the objectives of the change project was to
change the perception of every Union Bank staff through the
provision of top notch staff welfare programs, second to
none in the industry. This was in the view to motivate
personnel for business productivity and growth. This same
change project brought about the induction programs for
graduate trainees in 2009, the first of its kind in the history
of the bank which I was privileged to be a part of.

Today, the opposite is the story as far as staff welfare is
concerned. I would like to go into several salient areas where
the current management of Union Bank of Nigeria PLC have
failed in terms of staff welfare but I am going to focus on
just one of the areas.

I don't know why I am focusing on this area alone, perhaps
it's because sometimes it reminds me of the fact that it is an
act that is unheard of anywhere in the world or just because
it makes me laugh and shake my head in dismay every time
it strikes me again that what I am about to share with you is
one of the several myopic management policies in Union
Bank of Nigeria PLC.

Currently in Union Bank of Nigeria PLC, when staff go on
leave, they are only entitled to 80% of their leave
entitlement. The remaining 20% is payable on one condition.
The condition is that the staff on resumption of duty after
leave, must provide the HR department of the bank with
documents including Basic Traveling Allowance BTA, air
ticket, hotels ticket etc, just to prove that they traveled
abroad. Anything short of these and the remainder part of the
staff's entitlement – what is rightly theirs in the first place is
forfeited forever. Even if the 20% of the leave entitlement is
1naira; for heavens-sake, it is an appalling situation, day
light robbery as you may like to call it.

Now I don't want to even go into details or questions of what
happens to such monies that are forfeited in the case where
staff on leave do not travel abroad because I can beat my
chest that only a few staff travel abroad for vacation. Of
utmost concern to me is the degrading scenario where staff
have to travel to just Ghana in order not to forfeit what is
rightly theirs. I mean, if I tell this story to my unborn
children, they will scream "MODERN SLAVERY
DADDY!"

Nigeria is a richly blessed country in terms of natural
endowment. From the north to the south, east to west, there
are beautiful places to visit and the finest of festive activities
to be part of. Imagine that as a Nigerian, you have not even
explored one tenth of the tourist attractions in the country
only for you to be compelled to travel to another man's
country so that you won't lose what is yours. I think I am
going to go by the way of my unborn children – "MODERN
SLAVERY!"

This is a painful thing to bear, but what is more painful is the
fact that this policies don't affect staff high up in the banks
hierarchy. Whether they travel or not, they collect their full
entitlement and allowances. Even when they travel abroad, it
does not deplete the 80% part of their entitlement. The staff
that bear the brunt are staff down the hierarchy whose 80%
part of their leave entitlement cannot even afford a good
vacation in the first place.

Goodness me!, which organization does a barbaric thing such
as this to its staff in this jet age? Of all the factors that could
bring about the fall of a brand, poor staff motivation is one
dreaded factor and I don't think you get a lot of A+ in that
aspect when you dictate and subject your staff to modern
slavery by stealing what is rightfully theirs by way of
prejudiced policies.

By this singular act, the current management of the bank is
killing staff morale, and if you kill staff morale you are
indirectly killing the staff and whatever belief the staff have
in the bank. When you kill the staff you kill one of the core
values of the bank, in fact the most important value of the
bank and when you start killing the values of the bank, you
are indirectly killing the brand no matter how beautiful you
may paint it on the outside.

'Poor or zero capacity building – THE UNION BANK CASE

In 2009, Union Bank of Nigeria PLC, cashed in on a good
number of good hands when it carried out series of induction
program for graduate trainees cadre probably for the first
time in the history of the bank considering the manner in
which the recruitment exercise and the induction program
proper was organized.

I don't want to go into details of what may have become of
these graduates in terms of personal and professional skills
but with the current approach of the bank in rebuilding
capacity, I don't think the best will be gotten out of it.

Union bank used to pride itself as the trainers of other banks'
staff with its training school spread across the federation.

During the era of the management before the current
management, I meet Union bank staff especially from their
IT department at training centers for short/crash courses.

Today it is not exactly the same anymore.

When I inquired I discovered that rather than send staff on
training, the current management has thought it wisely to
subject all staff to what they call e-learning. For those who
don't know what e-learning in a working environment may
entail; it means from time to time, the bank will nominate a
staff to take a course on the e-learning platform and of
course there is always a window allotted for such exercise.

At the end of the course, you are also expected to either take
an exam or not depending on the volume of the course.

The ugly head in this situation is that you are expected to
meet the deadline for the exercise which of course means
you are compelled to find time within working hours to
finish up your e-learning course without affecting your job in
any ways.

Now I may not fault this policy in anyway, but let us face the
fact; in as much as this approach of capacity building may
suit staff from some department depending on the
background of their discipline, it may not suit some
department very well for example IT.

We all know that some departments are more practical
oriented than others, but compelling an IT staff for instance
to take courses on some e-learning platform is obviously a
joke. If what I fear is true concerning IT staff and the e-
learning platform thing then I think we customers have to be
wary.

How do you intend to sharpen the technical skills of a
programmer, a network engineer and a database specialist
without practical class sessions. Even professional and more
theoretical programs like ICAN needs class session let alone
more technical ones like information technology.

Whether this approach to capacity building by the
management of the bank is a deliberate one or not, what is
clear is that it is not the best practice and it surely will affect
the brand Union bank very negatively.

Chauvinistic management – THE UNION BANK CASE

Part of management's functions is to take decisions and to
make policies and the same is expected of Union bank's
management. Whatever the decision taken by management of
any organization, it is expected that the effect is reflected in
the customers satisfaction and 100% willingness of staff to
reproduce outstanding performance.

Authoritatively more than 70% of the decision taken by the
current management of Union bank has affected the staff
more than the customers. If the ways in which it has affected
staff is positive, one would not frown much but the direct
opposite is the case as these decisions have affected staff
negatively.

'Since the current management of the bank took over the
leadership role of the bank, it has released more than ten
decisions taken on disciplinary matters. Every time
disciplinary actions are released you find more of
termination, dismissal, warning, caution than commendation.

Decision on staff promotion for instance is very far from the
plans of the current management of Union bank. They take
delight in releasing decisions taken on disciplinary actions
and other policies that make staff lives miserable.

One begin to wonder if the only thing the current
management of the bank has come to do is to attack staff of
the bank in every way they know best. Sometimes you begin
to wonder if you are in a supposedly world class organization
or you are still in a secondary school especially when the
mail signature of the head of HR of the bank almost sounds
like – "Staff who miss the deadline of this exercise would be
sanctioned"

The only language in which the management of the bank
communicate with its staff is the language of threat. When
management is expected to be taking first class decisions to
better the lives of customers, they plot ways to carry out
ridiculous transfers and truncate staff career.

Ridiculous transfers is the order of the day in Union
bank. Take for instance an IT staff being transferred to
the remotest area of the country as customer service
officers, Account officers, cash center officers, marketers,
etc. What on becomes of the person's professional career
growth path?

One expect the management of the bank to know better that
there are specialized department that means round pegs are
put in round holes. Where in the world is it heard or done
that computer engineering graduates who have gained quite a
good amount of experience in the IT department of the bank
are transferred as customer service officers, loans and
advances officers, cash center officers, marketers etc. Of
what benefit is it to the bank, the staff and the customers at
large when such transfers are made? Perhaps the current
management of the bank is trying to tell us that there was
recruitment error in the first place which also says a "lot"
about the HR department of the bank.

In most organizations around the world, there are what you
call the front line officers and the back end officers. You
don't get to see the IT officers of DHL for instance every
other day. They are at the background making sure things are
in place for peoples parcel to get delivered. If they have to
move or be transferred, they are transferred to different unit
of the same department just to expand their horizon in a
familiar territory. You don't bring a farmer to do a surgeons
job, it is suicidal.

'Whatever motive is behind the manner in which the current
management of the bank takes its decision, it is clear that it
is a purely chauvinistic management that takes delight in
stiffening the environment for staff.

Of what benefit is this kind of approach you may want to
ask, and though it is said that uneasy lies the head that wears
the crown, the owner of the head should be humble enough
to ask people around if the cap fits and seek for support
when needed. But I wonder who the current management of
the bank will turn to for support when it treats it staff with
utmost scornfulness.

In the case of union bank it is like using a sledge hammer to
kill a fly – overkill. Because you have all authority as
management don't put you in the position to ridicule staff
even when you do and get away with it, the brand suffers.

Think about it, the only two things you find in a disgruntled
staff is sabotage and tendency for fraud believe it or not.

Well I expect that the current management of the bank won't
be too myopic to know this.

There are lots of factors that could kill a brand but it is more
dangerous when you treat staff with disrespect, disregard and
exhibit a chauvinistic kind of management.

Now should the customers of Union bank be wary of the
current management of the bank? I think a resounding Yes!

Is the answer. Let the management be aware that we
customers have even more information about the bank than
they do.

2015: Zoning Of Presidency Rubbish, Says Shekarau

Immediate past governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Thursday, picked holes in the agitation by some stakeholders for the emergence of a President of Northern extraction in 2015, describing such calls as "all rubbish".

Shekarau also stated that the recent defection of the state governor, Engr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress would not affect the chances of the ruling party come 2015.

The former presidential candidate of the now defunct All
Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, who recently defected to the
PDP, made this known while speaking with State House
correspondents after a meeting with Vice-President Namadi
Sambo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Shekarau said he had always opposed the idea of zoning of
elective positions, especially the presidency to a particular
region.

His words, "I have never subscribed to the argument of
localising the Presidency to a particular region. If you had
followed my arguments and my presentations or debates
during the presidential election, I said so. My concern is
what do we do to get the right leadership regardless of
where it is coming from.

"This issue of rotational presidency is not the issue. What
we should be talking about is balancing so that we can
carry the people along. Today, if I am a presidential
candidate from Kano and I tell you that my running mate is
from Katsina, won't you think I am crazy?

"Do I have to have that written in any document or
constitution for me to know that if I am a presidential
candidate from Kano, my running mate has to come from
the other side?

"So, this argument that it has to be my turn and it has to be
my village man is all rubbish. It is the problem of lack of
confidence among ourselves".

When asked whether he was ready to campaign for
President Goodluck Jonathan if he emerged the presidential
candidate of PDP in next year's elections, Shekarau said he
was prepared to campaign for any candidate of the party at
any level.

"I am prepared to campaign for the PDP and whoever turns
out to be the candidate of the PDP at any level is my
candidate," he said.

On Kwankwaso's defection, Shekarau said, "His
(Kwankwaso's) defection cannot kill PDP. Those who are
current with the situation on the ground know that the
governor of Kano State had long before now been out of
the PDP.

The former governor, however, tactically avoided a
question on whether he has now found the PDP's ideology
similar to his.

"I have always argued that these parties are one and the
same. It is all about Nigeria and Nigerians; it is all about
what we do to move the nation forward", he said.

"Everybody is talking about serving Nigerians. We are all
heading to the same destination. The only difference is that
we are taking different routes".
