Sad News: Bamidele Aturu Died At 49

Popular Nigerian human rights lawyer Bamidele Aturu has passed away.

Aturu is reported to have died in a Lagos hospital on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, following a brief illness

He was 49-years-old.

A civil rights lawyer, Aturu was well known for picking up and fighting for human rights causes. He was a founding member of Democratic Alternative, a political group committed to pursuing deep-rooted democratic principles.

Aturu who studied law at the University of Ife, recently turned down his nomination as a member of the on-going national confab, explaining that the conference was designed to achieve nothing.

Aturu was the defence counsel for Yoruba actor Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe) back in 2011 when the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested the popular actor for allegedly trafficking cocaine. The actor eventually beat the well-publicized trial, which lasted for close to a year.

Justin Bieber placed on 2 years probation

Justin Bieber has been placed on two years probation and ordered to take anger management classes after pleading no contest to misdemeanour vandalism charges on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 for egging his neighbour's house in Calabasas, California in January.

Justin Bieber has been placed on two years probation and ordered to seek anger management.

The 20-year-old star, who pleaded no contest to misdemeanour vandalism charges on Wednesday, July 9, 2014for egging his former neighbour's house in Calabasas, California in January, must attend 12 weeks of classes with a minimum of one every week, and must pay the victim $80,900 for causing 'an incredible amount of damage,' as part of his deal with prosecutors to avoid jail.

The 'Confident' hit-maker, who was not required to attend the Superior Court hearing in Van Nuys, California, was also ordered to perform five days of community service, such as picking up rubbish or graffiti removal, according to CNN.

In a written statement after the hearing, a spokesperson for the star said: 'Justin is glad to get this matter resolved and behind him. He will continue to move forward focusing on his career and his music.'

The victim previously submitted estimates suggesting the Canadian star, who was captured on video during the incident, had caused $20,000 worth of damage to his house because a large portion of the property needed to be re-plastered, but the judge said that cost of the repairs actually exceeded $80,000, adding: 'The house is a dream house.'

Following months of tension between him and his neighbours, Justin sold his mansion in the gated community to Khloé Kardashian, 30, in March, but the singer was also slapped with a restraining order, instructing him to stay 100 yards away from the former neighbour and his family.

Meanwhile, he is reportedly still in talks to reach a plea deal with prosecutors in Miami to avoid a trial in relation to his Driving Under the Influence (DUI), resisting arrest and possessing an invalid driver's licence charges stemming from his arrest there in January.

Comedian Wale Gates 'Defends' Student That Murdered His Dad For Beating Him

The story of a 21-year old university undergraduate, Tolani Ajayi, who killed his father, chopped the body to pieces, before dumping the remains in a bush near their home in Ogun State went viral and many have condemned his actions.

However, Comedian Wale Gates took to twitter to share his story as a battered child, saying he has a little sympathy for the boy. Wale believes Tolani finally snapped after years of probably constant beatings in the name of discipline, just like an abused wife would. Read his detailed encounter with his father inside...
"It might come has a surprise but I have a little sympathy for the young guy that murdered his RCCG dad. Its easy for some of you to focus on just his actions but not what led to it. Years of probably constant beatings in the name of discipline. African parents sometimes cross the line between disciplining a child to torturing that child. He unfortunately snapped and lost it.

His preacher dad was probably no different from mine. Whose idea discipline was to descend into unnecessary Over The top beating.

I know the bible says spare the rod and spoil the child, but I'm sure there's a common sense line somewhere. I'm not saying the boy was right I'm saying I have abit of sympathy for him cos 1 nite at d age of 19 I could have been in his situation. My dad only beat the back of your leg with a cane which left you with scars that lasted awhile unfortunately I wore shorts to school. The long lasting scars were more painful than the beatings cos everyone in school saw it and knew how I got it. Soon it progressed.

As I got older late teens it progressed to heavy slaps, heavy slaps 4nothing major. Like not washing his car 2his standard. Got 7 for that. One nite at the age of 19, we had alittle disagreement so little it was pointless. And b4 I knew it my dad was raining blows & slaps.....All I did was just guard my face and took it, but he didn't stop. I was backed into their bedroom, fell across d bed with his nails digging.In2 my neck (kept long nails) I finally pushed him off. He rushed out of d room & I stepped out to see where he was going I saw a man (dad).

Running towards me with a coke bottle, I ran back into the room locking the door behind me. He kicked the door in rage saying all sorts. Unfortunately the door held, mum in shocked stepped in. My brother stepped in reminding him he was a church deacon n he cldnt act like that.I still sometimes wonder what would have happened if I cldnt lock the room door or he got to me, one of us wld have been badly hurt at least. Its easy to sit online and judge the young man but when faced with senseless beating justified by religion & culture u might snap too. Some of the kinda beatings our parents gave us, we won't give our enemies let alone our own children that's how you know it was wrong.

Let me point out I was a regular child, I didn't smoke weed, steal or crazy stuff like that. I was a restless & playful child notin more. Some people say I FEARED MY PARENTS, u are not meant to FEAR your parents. Respect them Yes but Fear? No. I dnt want my daughter to FEAR me. That boy dt nite was a cornered battered animal, he was 21 no need2 beat him & bite him. He was no different frm an abused wife. He snapped.

In saying all these my dad came to watch me perform last year in Atlanta while I was on d LWKMD comedy tour we hadnt seen or spoken in 12yrs. Infact 2yrs earlier 2011 while in America for a show I picked up my phone and called him I knew that for me to move on I had to forgive. We get along well now, I actually believe he's a better man now. He's on my FB page, leaves comments & sends me prayers. Which I appreciate. Once again although he was wrong, I have some sympathy for the young man.

There was no DEMON involved he only reacted to an abusive father.

Anyway enough of the unnecessary story about my life. I mean who gives a shit you say. Even a continuously cornered a dog, sooner or later that weak dog would bite you. As a father myself now I do things differently now. My daughter would respect & love me not fear me. I don't wanna be FEARED. My wife on the other hand hardly got beaten by her parents and she turned out very well with better morals than me. So beating isnt d answer.

Most of the strictest parents who constantly resort to beatings are actually very religious people. Dy wanna beat d 'demon' out of u. I know we wanna blame d drugs (which is most likely weed) its important not the forget d trigger (the beating & biting from d now dead dad. This boy didn't just wake up and murder his SAINT of a father, there was an altercation that went too far. BTW my mum beat us too but she hardly crossed the line and by the time I was in SS1 SS2 it hardly happened I was too grown & strong anyway.

My simple question is: Would you beat your child the same way your parents beat you? If your answer is NO, then you know they were wrong. For the family it's a lose lose situation, they now ve a dead father & a son who wld most likely sentenced to death. For what was avoidable.Since the father was this praying Saint of a man why didn't he pray the evil away? Why did he resort to beating & biting a 21yr old MAN?"

Jonathan, Nigeria’s number one enemy – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described President Goodluck Jonathan as Nigeria's number one enemy because of his propensity to perpetrate impunity, abuse federal institutions and tolerate corruption, all in a dangerous clamour to win re-election at all costs.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said under President Jonathan's watch, Nigeria has been thrown into unprecedented crisis that is manifesting in the opposition strongholds of Rivers, Edo, Adamawa and Nasarawa States and elsewhere across the country.

The President has also abused national institutions perhaps more than any other President in Nigeria's history, deploying the police and the army to intimidate and harass ordinary citizens in general and opposition supporters in particular, as he did recently in Ekiti and he is allegedly planning to do in Osun state; shutting airports at will just to punish the opposition and muscling the electoral commission, INEC, to prevent incorruptible RECs from conducting elections, it said.

"As we write, there are contrived crises in Rivers and Edo, where a handful of lawmakers with the backing of higher authorities have been terrorizing the Houses of Assembly in their States and defying court orders at will, with the ultimate prize for the renegades being the states' chief executives; and there is crisis in Adamawa, where an impeachment plot has been undoubtedly instigated and hatched by higher authorities, despite tepid denials, and soldiers have been deployed to cage in very high state officials
"In Ekiti, several billions of  Naira was allegedly scooped from a massive political war chest to subvert democracy, induce voters and upturn all known political theories to such an extent that all that anyone
seeking to be elected now has to do is to dole out stolen public funds to a people already rendered comatose and impoverished by runaway corruption, glaring incompetence and sheer cluelessness that are the hall marks of the Jonathan Administration.

"Under President Jonathan, there is no longer the need to make any electoral promises or carry out people-oriented and quality of life projects. Just distribute bags of rice, expired or not, to a people already famished by a clueless federal government, and tuck in a few naira notes into the pockets of electorates who have been deliberately impoverished. This is a clear subversion of democracy.

"With such huge funds now being allegedly channeled to Osun to thwart the will of the people ahead of the 9 Aug. governorship election, in an attempt to repeat the Ekiti 'experiment' which the PDP-led federal government deemed to have been a 'success', it is now clear the Jonathan Administration will not pull any punches in subverting democracy ahead of the 2015 general elections.

"It is also clear now what happened to the 20-billion-dollar oil money that went missing, as well as the reason behind the massive oil subsidy fraud, the Malabo multi-billion dollar fraud, the pension scam, and finally why the President, whose body language does not abhor corruption, has redefined stealing as anything but corruption," APC said.

The party said as far as President Jonathan is concerned, all that matters is his re-election. While he pursues that goal with vigour, the over 200 missing girls in Borno can stay where they are being kept by their abductors for over three months now; and the daily carnage in the North-east as well as Kaduna, Nasarawa and Benue can continue, even though over 12,000 people have been killed and 8,000 maimed. Once the President continues to play his dangerous  politics of re-election, which involves using state resources and national institutions to muscle and muzzle the opposition; the press and ordinary citizens, allis well in the eyes of his purposeless party.

'Unfortunately, in the midst of all the shenanigans, Nigerians are more divided than ever along ethnic and religious lines, no thanks to a President who is so obsessed with power that he will not hesitate to cash in on the nation's fault lines, abuse federal institutions, compromise once-credible public commentators to shamelessly mortgage their integrity on the altar of greed, and disregard even the Electoral Act by kick-starting electioneering campaign before the starting gun is fired.

"In view of this, we are now alerting the good people of Nigeria that President Jonathan's re-election at all costs is a clear and present danger to Nigeria, her people and indeed her democracy.

"Unless Nigerians speak out and unless the instigated harassment of the media by security agencies is halted, so the Fourth Estate of the Realm can continue to perform its constitutional duties unhindered, Nigerians should gear up for more dangerous days ahead, which will include the stripping of the citizenry of their constitutionally-guaranteed basic rights, more egregious abuse of national institutions, perpetration of more acts of corruption as well as the muscling and muzzling of the opposition, even as the people will continue to be impoverished.

"On our part, as the country's main opposition party, we pledge to be unrelenting in speaking the truth to power, irrespective of whether ornot it makes the federal government uncomfortable, in the overall interest of our nation," APC said.

We Have Never Seen Poverty At This Magnitude Before In Nigeria- Femi Kuti

Femi Kuti is pissed with the situation of the country and says he does not see himself as a Nigerian. Speaking in a recent interview with Tribune, Femi Kuti questioned the journalist interviewing him, asking what was right in Nigeria or about being a Nigerian. Hear him;

"I don't see myself as a Nigerian…I'm tired, angry and frustrated. It's either you don't live in this country or you are being a journalist. Is it the electricity or the traffic? The traffic is just unbearable. Lagosians wake up at 4:00 a.m. and don't get home sometimes till 11:00 p.m. And how much does an average person earn? In fact, I don't want to talk again. I'm just tired….We are talking about Boko Haram. We have never seen poverty at this magnitude before. Health care services are failing. Education sector is also failing; so, what is there to celebrate? Poverty? Ethnic violence? Religious differences? What exactly? Tell me."

Chaos In UNILAG After Student Shot In Head

Chaos broke out in the University of Lagos after a final year student was shot in the head on Monday at the King Jaja Hall area, Lagos State.

Education activities in the University of Lagos were paused as the unknown gunmen have carried out a sudden attack on one of its students.

The final year student of Philosophy, Sapara, was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, after a bullet touched the side of his head.

According to some witnesses of the shooting, the possible malefactors escaped from the scene by car seen on the campus several hours before the attack.

The shooting provoked panic and stampede as students were hurriedly
leaving the building. However, the next day the learning process returned to normalcy as students were seen writing their exams.

The Dean of Students' Affairs of the University, Prof. Olukayode Amund, confirmed the incident, assuring that the security operatives exert every effort to unravel the culprits and bring
them to justice.

He also expressed his assumption of possible cultist attack as such kind of operations are typical for them.

He said,

"The events surrounding the incident are still unknown and by the time we conclude our investigation, the university authorities will take the necessary and appropriate action."

Police parade suspected baby factory operators in Rivers state

Three pregnant women and a 36-year-old man (pictured above) suspected to be involved in producing babies for sale were paraded by the Rivers State Police Command yesterday July 8th, Punch reports.

The suspects, who were arrested in Igwuruta, Rivers state on July 5th, were identified as Odinchinma Nwala (25), Glory Anyanwu (22), Goodness Nwankwo (19), and Stanley Okechukwu (male, 36).

The DPO of Igwuruta Police Station, Mr. Bello Muhammed, who spoke with newsmen, explained how the suspects were arrested, saying they were alerted by well meaning Nigerians.

"We sent a patrol team that went and confirmed the information. When the police traced and arrested Okechukwu, who took the team to where he kept the girls on Saturday, July 5, 2014, it was discovered that the suspects had been involved in the business for a long time." Continue...

"The girls were brought from different local government areas, and further investigation revealed that after delivering, he will settle (pay) the girls N100,000 per baby girl and N150,000 for a baby boy before selling the babies," the DPO said.
Mohammed said that investigation was ongoing to get to the root of the matter, adding that child trafficking remains an offence in the country.

However, Okechukwu, who spoke with newsmen, denied operating a baby factory. He said that he was only rendering assistance to the young pregnant women.

Also, one of the pregnant women, who identified herself as Glory Anyanwu, said she was eight months pregnant, even as she denied that they were being kept for a baby producing business.

"He (Okechukwu) saw me in this condition and decided to assist me by offering me and my unborn baby accommodation. But I know the person that impregnated me," Anyanwu said.

Female Teacher was Caught red-handed with a Student in School’s Chemistry Lab

The unfortunate incident took place in Uganda, Where a chemistry female teacher was caught cheating with her own student during break time. Rumour has it that they 've been engaged in this for a while now but nobody ever noticed until that fateful day… it all got busted when the laboratory prefect brought some junior students to help him clean up the lab during break time, not knowing that something was actually going on in the lab.

They Never knew it was going to be that easy because the teacher always lock the door with key anytime they 're inside so it would look like no one is inside but unluckily for them, the laboratory prefect has the spare key.

So it all went wrong when the young innocent prefect got the door open just to see something he never thought would ever happen, they were all flabbergasted and speechless..

The young junior students that was supposed to tidy up the lab started shouting, raising alarm so some of the teachers and principal quickly arrived at the scene only to witness the unimaginable. It was really a day to remember in the school and so sadly, the teacher and the student that were engaged in the act were finally expelled from the school so as not to corrupt the other innocent students.

I believe this serves as example to all those students who are engaged in such activities in the school, if you don't stop today, you may not have another chance to…

Elevating Electricity To Statistics

Basic as electricity is to modern living; there is a basic misunderstanding about reflecting this importance in the lives of Nigerians. The people are unimpressed about government trumpeted gains in managing the challenges of electricity supply.

Last year, government admitted that only 40 million Nigerians, about a quarter of the population, have access to electricity supply. It was meant to be an indication of progress. Nigerians wonder who the 40 million are and regularity of supplies.

Many have electricity that is useless, even for ordinary lighting, as the supply illuminates below the level of a candle flame, what is technically called a brownout. In the Nigerian experience, a brownout is worse than a blackout, as the sufferers are reckoned among the supplied. Abuja, once famous for its regular electricity supply is in darkness. Government offices and its streets share the darkness. Some offices have resorted to generators, or rationalised their activities to save valuable equipment from ruination.

Since the statistics were about people, do the 40 million users include heavy users like industries, whose consumption in days could be what a sizeable community would require for months. Were rural Nigerians counted?

We acknowledge that concrete steps are being taken to ameliorate the deplorable power situation.

However, government must understand that Nigerians are not interested in titillating statistics that still leave them in darkness. Their understanding of improved electricity supply is light in every bulb and equipment they switch on, longer presence of electricity and in a quality that serves their needs. With the billions they are spending in generating their own electricity, Nigerians can find the means to pay a little more for better electricity supply.

A chunk of the stupendous revenues of fuel marketing firms can be adduced to the power situation as virtually everyone buys petrol or diesel to generate power, generate noise, and increase the level of carbon in the environment. High levels of carbon harm the environment.

Concerns for damages to the environment and the clearly stated prospects stable electricity supply holds for Nigeria are enough for government to target practical results in electricity projects.

More challenges lie on the long road to improved electricity. More stable power supply would increase demand as many who run on private power would patronise public supply. Has this been factored into electricity demand?

Nigerians find no comfort in celebrating statistics and approximating them to action. The number of distribution companies, the length of transmission lines or the megawatts of electricity generated are mere efforts. Nigerians have spent decades listening to these lines. They understand improved electricity to mean uninterrupted power supply.

If government had similar understanding, it would be more sober in assessing its efforts.

Stop Politicising Governance, Aregbesola Cautions Jonathan

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has cautioned President Goodluck Jonathan against politicisation of governance saying that issues that have to do with the lives and well being of Nigerians should not be put on the altar of politics.

Governor Aregbesola who spoke against what he claimed as the continued refusal of the Federal Government to issue Osun State the security code that would activate the Emergency Security Centre conceived by his state also slammed the media for its unwillingness to throw light on the matter.

The governor who said that the security code was needed to enable search and rescue operations by the Emergency Security Centre said that had the centre been active that the senior officials of the Nigerian Union of Journalists who died in a road accident in the state would have been rescued.

Speaking to journalists at the weekend, the governor also lamented the refusal of the president to allow the state use the national railway tracks for the state's pilot agricultural project that was conceived to make Osun a food hub.

Decrying what he claimed was the unnecessary politicisation of issues pertaining to governance, Aregbesola said that the president should remove himself from above partisan politics in considering issues that have to do with the wellbeing of the citizenry.

Aregbesola, who said he personally met the president to request an access code said "what remains for the centre to function is just a short security code approval of which should only come from the Federal Government."

He regretted that a letter written to the president on the issue has not been honoured ith a response or acknowledgment.

He disclosed that with the centre in operation accident victims could be accessed quickly as he warned that the refusal of the federal administration to respond positively to the request could affect both members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

"Security threat does not discriminate," Aregbesola said as he observed that "if the Security Centre had been functional, those young journalists that died recently along Ife road could have survived the accident if help has reached them in time."

We Do Not Worship Idols Like Most People Think - Catholic Bishop Clarifies

The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Hilary Paul Okeke has made it clear while speaking at the Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help/Parish Day Celebration of Saints Michael, Rapheal and Gabriel Catholic Church in Lagos that the church does not worship Mary and other saints, that what they do is to venerate Mary, being the mother of Jesus Christ.

"We do not worship idols as most people think. Those who lack understanding of the word of God equate our worship for the one true God with support from images and symbols as idolatry. We worship God, worship Jesus Christ and we honour Mary and the Saints. Their images in churches and homes before us represent holiness, sacraments and signs of their presence in our life.

"Let us venerate Mary, Mother of perpetual help for in venerating her, we are going to Jesus Christ. Let us have her images in our individual homes as it will draw us to holiness, remember our vocations, her images will draw us closer to Christ and do whatever Jesus Christ commands us to do," the bishop added.

"We need Mary to help us to overcome in whatever we do, to overcome various challenges in our families, marital and extra marital co-affairs and sex, polygamy, same sex union, divorce and suffering homes. Young ladies need Mary in order not to forsake their Catholic faith by marrying outside the church", he said.

Osun Election: APC decries delay in release of Voters Cards, warns INEC against partisanship

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has decried the delay in distributing the permanent voters cards to registered voters in the state ahead of the Aug. 9th 2014 governorship election in Osun state, warning that it might be a ploy to disenfranchise voters.

"INEC has been painfully slow in processing the permanent voters cards, and one can only hope that the electoral body is not doing this deliberately to disenfranchise voters, especially in opposition strongholds," the party said in a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

"The slow processing of the permanent voters cards has in particular hit the Central Senatorial District of the State, and has affected those who had earlier registered as well as those who registered this year," it said.

APC said INEC has continued to tell those who throng its offices in the state to collect their permanent voters cards that the cards are not ready, without giving an indication of when they will be ready for collection.

"If INEC has no diabolical plan, then it should speed up the processing of the permanent voters cards. We say this based on the reported announcement by the REC in Osun State that whoever does not possess a permanent voters card will not be allowed to vote in the Aug. 9th election," the party said.

It urged INEC to maintain its neutrality during the forthcoming election, and to ensure it does not do anything that can affect the credibility of the commission or the integrity of the election.

APC recalled that a few days before the Ekiti governorship election on June 19th, INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega had told stakeholders that the commission would use colour-code ballot papers to ensure that ballots meant for one local government are not taken to another.

"However, not only did INEC not use colour-coded ballot papers in the Ekiti election, it never felt the need to explain its sudden volte-face. This is a blow to the integrity of INEC and we hope it won't be repeated," the party said.

Meanwhile, the APC has raised the alarm over a multi-pronged strategy by the federal authorities to skew the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun State favour of the PDP, just like they did in Ekiti State last month.

The party said the dubious strategy by the federal authorities involves using the military and other security agencies to lock down the state days ahead of voting as well as an ongoing starving of the state of funds so it cannot meet its obligations.

"Whereas Ekiti was locked down about three days to the election in the state, indications are that Osun will be locked down at least a week before the state's poll, while the security agencies will again be used to harass, intimidate and arrest opposition politicians just like they did with impunity in Ekiti.

"We are raising the alarm now so the world can see that any election can only be described as free and fair if the entire process is transparent and not skewed in favour of any of the parties. We insist that election is a process, and that whatever happens on election day is only but a part of the whole.

"Therefore, we demand a level playing field for all the candidates before, during and after the Osun election. We reject any plan to use of the military and other security agencies to lock down the state and to harass, intimidate and arrest opposition members. We call on local and international observers to take note of these and other anomalies ahead of the Osun poll," it said.
