Why we have been together for twelve years – Midnight crew

They were actually eleven in number when they started in
2011 but the quartet of Michael Abdul, Odunayo Ojo
Onasanya, Pat Uwaje King and Gbenga Oyebola, known
simply as the Midnight Crew have kept their wits about them
for nothing else but for the love of what they do and enjoy
doing. In this revealing interview, which they take turn to
respond, they open up on their careers, their dreams and why
they have stuck together for that long. Excerpts:

How has the journey been this last twelve years?

It's not been very easy but we made up our mind to go all the
way as long as God stands by us . The very funny thing is
that, we see very far.

Have you guys ever had issues or moments of friction,
where you quarrel?

Yes, we do have those times. But the good thing is that we are
friends, first of all, and we have realized we all need each
other in our lives. And no matter the differences, we just have
to reconcile. There is nothing that is irreconcilable. And we
try to hear ourselves out and then we put ourselves in each
others' shoes.

How did you guys compose that song 'Igwe'?

'Igwe' came from God. It is a song that God gave to us and it
is evident in the way that it was received. As a matter of fact,
we did that song and then we just traveled out.

What year did the song come out?

It first came out in 2006, then we couldn't find expression for
it, so we had to remix it. We changed the production which
actually paved way for a much more serious production, better
sound and I also think time worked for it. That is, the time
that God actually decided to set aside a new throne. Then he
puts the song, Igwe on the throne.

How many awards have you won as a group?

We have never bothered to count. As a matter of fact, we still
got awards this year. Initially, we used to beg for votes. But
now, we don't and we still get the awards.

What were you trying to achieve, because at one point you
use some kind of hip-hop beat and then it just changed?

First of all, I think Igwe is about the first song that you have
the languages being code switched. Well, it came from our
experience also. We've had situations before the Igwe song
where we go to a church and then you sing a lot of Yoruba
songs and you see someone walks up to ask you why you are
singing more of Yoruba songs in an Igbo church and vice
versa. The song was actually able to bring a lot of people
together . Even the Hausas who didn't have their language in
it, were also thrilled by the song.

What has been your happiest moment for the past twelve
years?

Being together.

What advice do you have for the groups that are breaking up
and new ones coming up these days?

Well, I would say that the vision that God gave to us has been
our driving force. The vision to cure the world of religion and
put the praise of God on the lips of all men. When we say
we've been able to put the praise of God on the lips of the
Yoruba man, we realize what we've not done for the Igbo,
Hausa, and we also realize that there is still more to do.

That has actually been our drive and we've been able to
achieve one song which all nation sing. But more function and
more assignment are still here. So, I think that the fact that we
obey God, we allow God to direct us and thirdly, we maintain
dedication on the assignment that He has given to us.

Everyday we wake up, we realize that we are going deeper
and deeper into all of the assignment.

Why haven't you guys been able to give us something more
than the Igwe song?

I told someone that the fact that you give birth to a child that
becomes the president, doesn't mean all your children will
become presidents. Every child has it's own purpose. So,
every album that we release also has it's purpose. Our desire
is not to be famous but to win souls. So, whatever God will
do and whatever song He will use, let him use. I have
testimony of a song titled "Nothing can stop me" in our first
album. We went to Lokoja and a woman came with her child
and testified that she was barren for years. To the glory of
God, after listening to that particular song "Nothing can stop
me"she was able to bear a child. For me, that was a great
testimony.

Can we say that has been your most touching experience?

At the beginning of our lives, that is, about twelve years ago,
when midnight crew started at Yaba College of Technology,
two testimonies came. The first one was about a young guy
who had given up hope about life and was at the verge of
committing suicide but that same day, we were to have our
concert. When he came for the programme, he saw many
youths praising God and he wanted to know why they were so
happy and wondered if they didn't have problems like him.

To our greatest surprise, he walked up to us to tell us of his
initial plans to commit suicide and how his hope was restored.
Secondly, a lady told us how her mother was healed from
depression after listening to one of our songs titled "Mgbene".

Since then, I realized that everything we do have a way of
reviving and giving people hope. And since then, our part is
to ensure that we inspire people and make them happy. I think
people choose each of these songs to bless them, and God
chose Igwe to bless him.

Why did you choose to come together as a group?

We didn't choose to, destiny brought us together. We were in
the same church choir called "Original love choir" when we
were in school. We just ignited together and decided that
there are still more to do. We actually did what God wanted
us to do in Yaba Tech. Singing everywhere and blessing lives.

So we asked ourselves if what we've done was enough or
should we take the blessing to the bigger world?. So
immediately we left school, we decide to come up with

"Midnight crew" and do away with the initial name "Original
love". Though the choir still exists.

Is the name 'Midnight Crew' not too hip-hop like for a
gospel group?

God told Gideon to go and tear down the walls of Baal. Our
own mission is to tear down the walls of religion. We saw
similarities, they went at nights and we rehearsed at nights
while we were in school because we went for classes during
the day then towards evening, we would go for singing
rehearsals. We realized that there was a lot of similarities in
our assignments. On the last note, they were eleven in
number. Comprising of Gideon and ten other men for that
assignment. When Midnight Crew started at the initial stage,
we were eleven in number. Some actually got married and
relocated while some went back for their second degree etc.

How was the fantastic four able to stick together?

It's like coming from a barber's shop and someone telling you
how good your shave is. We just realized that we were four.

Did you ever imagine you would become this famous?

When reality comes, you can start crying. But the truth is,
God, most of the time will not do a thing for you without
showing you what you will become. But when you become
that thing, you just find yourself shedding tears because it is
possible to miss it. So you just thank God that you made it.
For the men in the group, how do you cope with your female
admirers?

The ladies are doing very fine, they are Christians and they
have the fear of God. And above all, we are doing very well
together.

Nigeria Secret Police Release US-Based Medical Practitioner & Lawyer Detained Over “Online Activism"

Nigeria's secret police today arrested and later released a United States based medical practitioner, Emmanuel Fashakin on arrival at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport.

Dr. Fashakin is an older brother of Rotimi Fashakin, former spokesman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) arrived on Arik airline flight into Lagos only to be detained by the SSS.

The doctor, who is also a lawyer, is well known on Nigerian listservs for his comments on the state of affairs in Nigeria.

His lawyer, Bamidele Aturu confirmed the arrest and subsequent release an hour ago to Saharareporters, stating that he was held for several hours in the custody of the SSS both at the airport and its Kingsway road offices in Ikoyi Lagos.

The arrest of Dr. Fashakin offers evidence that the Goodluck Jonathan government is opening a new front not in the war against Nigeria's problems of which it has become a part, but on critics of bad governance.

In his letter to the Director General of the SSS, which was copied to the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr. Aturu called for his client to be released immediately.

He pointed out that it is indefensible to subject a person who had been on an eleven hour non-stop flight to the physical and psychological stress of detention which cause is not divulged for hours.

The lawyer also stressed that the detention constitutes an unwarranted violation of the right of Dr. Fashakin to respect for the dignity of his person and not to be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment as guaranteed by section 34 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, Articles 4 and 5 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and all other International Human Rights Instruments.

"Since no reason has been advanced for the detention of our client, we want to believe that it has nothing to do with his well-known expression on the internet of opinions about how to advance democracy in Nigeria and ensure that our people are rescued from the abyss of inexplicable poverty occasioned by greed and graft," he said. "Whatever may be the case, we would like to make it clear the arrest and detention of our client is unacceptable and that we shall implacably seek all possible and known legal remedies on his behalf."

Demanding that Dr. Fashakin be released within 24 hours, Mr. Aturu said he would otherwise be compelled to take all lawful and necessary steps to ensure that the rights of his client are protected, including going to court.

It would be recalled that only last week, President Jonathan threatened to sue SaharaReporters for libel for reporting on the seedy and corrupt tendencies of his government.

"As unregulated as they are, SaharaReporters and their ilk are not beyond the bounds of legal action for libel and willful defamation of the character and reputation of a President who has courageously stepped forward to serve his country," presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said.

Nigerians believe Mr. Jonathan's government to be the most corrupt and hypocritical in the country's history, and even his former Internet fans who supported him in the 2011 elections continue to say so in various fora

ABU ASUU Chair: "President Has No Power To Sack Us... But We're Waitning For HIS Dismissal"

Even the President cannot relieve university lecturers of their duties, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria chapter, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Aliyu, said yesterday.

No minister, and even no the President, hold the power to hire or fire, Mr. Aliyu said.

"Nobody can tell us to go back to work.

"If they think they can get other lecturers, let them go and get them.

"We are not going back and we are ready to be dismissed by the minister. But even the President cannot sack us. Even the President has no place in the university when it comes to employment issues.

"During the military era, General Babangida tried what this man [Goodluck Jonathan] is saying, but did not succeed. And let us see how they would succeed.

"Tell them to do the right thing, but if they feel that they can threaten us, let them go ahead and see where it will take them," Dr. Aliyu said.

Lecturers of the university were unanimous in condemning the statement credited to the minister for education, Mr. Nyemson Wike, that university lecturers who refused to return to work on or before December 4 would be sacked.

"It is unfortunate that these are the types of people we have as leaders. The welfare of the citizens is not their business. Because they learnt that we have voted for an end to the strike they thought that they can intimidate us," Dr. Aliyu added.

"I was one of those that voted for an end to the strike, but I would not obey the directive, and let us see what would happen. They have starved us for over four months, and now they are threatening us. We are waiting for their dismissal," he concluded.

‘No more Fulani herdsmen, natives conflicts in Delta’

Alhaji Auwalu Tukur is the Special Assistant to Delta State
Governor on Special Duties and also the chairman of Arewa
community in South-south and South-east. In this interview,
Tukur speaks on how government is collaborating with the
people to promote peace in the state.

Excerpts:

How long have you been in Delta State?

I was born and brought up in Asaba. I am a businessman and
also a politician. I started politics when I was in secondary
school during the NRC and SDP period. When I finished
school, I continued my business and politics too. I joined
UNCP during the Abacha era; I was their PRO then. I later
became a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party
in the state.

His Excellency, Chief James Ibori became the flag-bearer of
the party and we mobilized our people to vote for him. He
really did well and got our support throughout his two tenures.

I was a board member of the Pilgrim Welfare Board. When
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan came in, he also appointed
me a special assistant to him and this is our second term in
office.

When you look at this country, Dr. Uduaghan is the first
governor to appoint many non-indigenes into his cabinet.

Today, you have an Hausa man in his cabinet representing the
Arewa community, that is myself. We also have special
assistant to the governor representing the Yoruba community,
Mr. Ola Oni. We have another one representing the Igbo
community, Attani Nwachukwu, and we have Mrs. Linda
Nwokolo in charge of Akwa Ibom/Cross River. There is
another special assistant looking after other minority tribes in
the South-south. That you see these non-indigenes in
government means the governor likes everyone living in the
state and takes everybody as one. He is a man that believes in
fairness, unity and peaceful co-existence of this country.
You have been government since 1999; how do you assess

the PDP government right from the tenure of Ibori till date?
Ibori laid the foundation, now, if you see the massive
infrastructural development that is taking place in the state,
especially in Warri and Asaba, you see the influx of people
into Delta State to invest.

Asaba is wearing a new look. Today, Delta State is the fastest
growing state in the West African sub-region. We have
massive construction of roads going on and we have the best
schools. It is only in this state that you have you primary
school children being taught with computers.

The governor has empowered Deltans beyond reasonable
doubt through micro-credit, and YETA. Many youths are
being trained at Songhai, Amukpe. Even youths that are non-
Deltans, Hausa and Yoruba are being empowered through
the initiative of Uduaghan. The governor is a true Nigerian;
he is a man that fears God.

Some years ago, some people from across the Niger ran to
Delta State for shelter and the state government catered for all
those that ran into the state. They were given shelter, food,
security and to crown it all he gave them over 11 hectares of
land to trade. If go to along Onitsha/Asaba road you will see
a very big market being operated by my people.

In terms of security, you know there is peace and security in
the three points agenda of the governor. So, in terms of peace
and security, today in Delta we have peace. Before, you hear
of kidnapping, today that is no longer the case. And that is
why you see investors both foreign and local pouring into the
state.

In term of infrastructure, government is constructing the
Ughelli/Asaba express road so that traders from across the
Niger can move their goods to Warri and from Warri to
Asaba and Onitsha. Look at the massive development at the
international airport. It is the first of its kind in the South-
south.

As special assistant to the governor on special duties, how
have you used your position to promote peace between
Deltans and Fulani herdsmen?

Deltans are peaceful and very accommodating. We were born
here and we grew up here, we never had any problems until
recently when there was a problem with Fulani herdsmen
and farmers. I had several meetings with the Fulanis and I
cautioned them. Delta is a peaceful state and we have been
living in peace for decades. We do not want what is
happening in other states to happen in Delta State. Now you
no longer hear stories about Fulani herdsmen clashing with
farmers because we have talked to them.

“90% Of Nigerians Believe My Church Is Fake & Demonic – TB Joshua

In a recent interview, controversial and alleged fake Nigerian
Prophet TB Joshua has confirmed the feelings of many
Nigerians towards him.

Hear what TB Joshua said in a recent interview:

"I may not be accepted by people in Nigeria but my
acceptance in the world has been announcing me to my world.

When you look at the people working with me, you see that
the ratio of Nigerians working with me are not more than 10
per cent."

A survey carried out indicated that 60% of his church staff are
from the Philippines. Of course Nigerians are intelligent
people, they hardly fall for false prophets.

Over to you, why do you think most Nigerians believe TB
Joshua is fake ? -

Psquare, Don Jazzy, Omotola, Named Among 100 Most Influential Africans

The New African Magazine has named Ace Music Producer
Don Jazzy, Super Diva Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Psquare,
writer Chimama Adichie as part of the 100 Most Influential
People in Africa in 2013.
Other Africans in the list include Ghanaian/US actor Idris
Elba, Nigerian/UK actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sudan supermodel
Alek Wek, South African comedian Trevo Noah, South
African fashion mogul, Precious Moloi-Motsepe and
Senegalese actor Omar Sy.

“I like Jim Iyke.Is he not having a better life now?”- Prophet TB Joshua

TB Joshua in a rare interview with Punch opened up on Jim
Iyke and allegations that he pays people to come and fake
miracles. He also said God queries him when he invites
presidents to his church
On Jim Iyke
Oh please, don't drag me into that. All I can say is that if a
person needs to see a doctor, he should be free to do so. I like
the young man. He has been defending himself on the
internet. Is he not enjoying a better life now? Are things not
working for him?
On allegations he pays people to fake miracles
How much will I give to the president of a nation to
come here? Even when they come, I don't get any
financial gain but I incur cost because I want to ensure
that they are well cared for. That is all; I even prefer to
spend my time with the poor than to be with the
presidents. If a president visits this place today, the whole
of the day will be devoted to that visit, I would have lesser
time for the poor people, who need my attention. God has
been warning me over this trend so much that when some
presidents said that they wanted to visit me, I said no. I
said it would be better for me to visit them in their
countries. Each time they visit this place, I receive query
from God because of my time that should have been used
to attend to the poor and the needy that are waiting for
me. One soul is not superior to the other, why should I
continue to receive query? Really out of three presidents
that may visit, there will hardly be one that will show good
example of the counsel that they received from me. If the
needy are more receptive to God, it is better to give them
more of my time.

Midnight Massacre: One-year-old baby shot at close range

Tuesday, November 26, 2013 will remain indelible in the
minds of the people of Fan District of Barkin-Ladi Local
Government Area of Plateau State, not for cheer, but for
melancholy. It was a day when 40 of their people, mostly
women and children, were murdered in cold blood by
unknown attackers who raided four villages in the middle of
the night. Among those killed were entire households. And as
has become the norm somewhat, the attackers, said to have
been many, had a field day perpetrating their evil with no
security agent around to challenge them.

About 10 people were injured by the attackers who also set
fire to houses of their victims leaving some of the corpses
charred.

The anguish of the people of Tatu, Rahure, Bwok and Dorong
was palpable and infectious. Emotions flowed as the people
narrated how the attackers unleashed terror on defenseless
women and children. Take, for instance, the story of a one-
year-old who, woken from sleep when the assailants arrived at
about 12.30 am and, frightened at the sight of the strangers,
started crying. This was said to have infuriated the attackers
who shot him tearing his tender and small body into pieces.
The remains had to be gathered for burial.

"A boy of about one year, who was crying when the invaders
attacked the family, was shot at close range and his remains
littered the room when we got there. We are short of words to
describe this barbaric incident", the village head of Tatu, Da
Pam Tsok, said. Tsok said he was lucky to have escaped the
attack disclosing that the assailants concentrated on two
households where they killed all the 15 members.

"The attack was carried out in a barbaric manner that defies
comprehension. At about 1am on Tuesday, I started
hearing gunshots; so I rushed out of my home and headed in
the direction of the gunshots only to see the corpses of our
people who were murdered in cold blood by the attackers. Our
village was under siege for more than 30 minutes They killed
15 people in two households and set the houses on fire. We
are shocked by the attack because we had no quarrel with any
group or person and we have been living in peace with non
natives in our midst," he added.

The story was the same at Rawuru village where a man and
his seven children were murdered by the attackers. A relation,
Job Chollom, said the gunmen stormed the village at about
12.30 am. and lamented the railure of security men whom he
said were not too far away to come to their rescue. He added
that nine people were killed in the village while five were
injured by the attackers whom he said wore military uniforms
and surrounded the village before launching the attack.

The attackers also killed 10 people at Bwok and seven at
Dorong village and had disappeared by the time men of the
Special Task Force, STF, maintaining security in the Plateau
State got there. Interim Administrator of the local government
area, Mr. Habila Dungs, who said he was informed of the
attacks around 12 midnight, confirmed that about 40 people
were killed in the attacks on the four villages. He noted that
security men had difficulties accessing the villages,
describing the attack as barbaric.

The mutilated corpses, some of which were burnt beyond
recognition were given mass burials in the different villages.
President of the Church of Christ in Nations, COCIN, Dr.
Soja Bewarang after the mass burial at Tatu, expressed worry
that the presence of security men "all over the place" did not
deter the attackers. He condemned frequent attacks on the
communities in the state by those who appear bent on wiping
out the people. He called on government and security agencies
to do more to secure the people, noting that killings had
become a source of embarrassment for the country.

An STF statement signed its Media Officer, Captain Salisu
Mustapha, confirmed the attacks, explaining that the assailants
fled on sighting members of the task force whom he said
responded promptly to distress calls. It added that
the Commander of the STF, Major General David Enetie, had
visited the villages to assess the situation during which he
pledged that everything would be done to track down the
perpetrators. The statement called on the people to remain law
abiding, cooperate with security agencies "and jealously
guard the relative peace we are enjoying on the Plateau."

Sunday Vanguard learnt that the STF has stepped up patrol of
the area while more troops have been deployed. The attack on
the four villages, coming days after similar attacks in
Shendam Local Government Area and the alert by Governor
Jonah Jang of security reports revealing plans to disrupt the
Christmas festivities in the state, is setting many people on
edge. Many residents expressed the hope that necessary steps
would be taken to avoid a relapse into the situation of some
years back, when attacks and killings became rampant,
throwing the people of the state into despair.

Could This Be The Man Tinubu Wants To Replace Governor Fashola Come 2015?

Strong indications have emerged that the leadership of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos have adhered to the
request of Christians in the state for a Christian governor in
2015. The candidate of choice is Ayo Gbeleyi, the present
Commissioner of Finance in the administration of
quintessential Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.
The decision to present a Christian candidate emerged after
due consultations with eminent Christian leaders and clerics
who have promised to mobilise other faithfuls to vote enmasse
for the party if a Christian emerges as gubernatorial candidate
in the state. The leadership of the All Progressives Congress
after a thorough search have found a willing and reliable
Christian candidate in Ayo Gbeleyi, a thoroughbred
professional known for his exceptional brilliance and
intelligence.
Since the searchlight has beamed on Gbeleyi, Christian
leaders are delighted that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has
not only heeded to their demands but responded accordingly.
They had argued that Moslems have successively governed
the state since the inception of democracy. It is just fair and
equitable to allow a Christian to govern Lagos, given the fact
that succesive governors of the state since 1999 that
democracy returned have been Moslems. Besides, they argued
that the three Senatorial seats are occupied by Moslems.
The call for a Christian governor, observers of politics in the
state reasoned is not to ignite any religious crisis but to ensure
balance and equity. Observers opined that the efforts of
successive administrations in the state in the areas of
governance, accountability and reliability are not and should
not be exclusive of faith or religion. A thorougbred candidate
like Gbeleyi, they posited, is equally suitable for the exalted
post. With his pedigree and insights in public service, finance,
procurement, constrtuction, project management, etc, he is,
no doubt, a round peg in a round hole.
It could be recalled that he singlehandedly planned and made
a major breakthrough with his well-thoughout Public Private
Partnership (PPP) initiative in Lagos. While he served as the
Director-General of the parastatal, he also doubled as the
Senior Adviser to the Executive Governor Babatunde Raji
Fashola on the project. Overtime, his visionary leadership
amid pressure, necessity and even adversity on several
projects in his purview yielded unprecedented positivity and
growth that sooner than ever, Lagos becomes an envy spot in
PPP.
Commendable is his ability to work seamlessly with the
Ministries Department Agencies (MDAs) to realise and
institutionalise Lagos of our dream and the government strides
to make the state a Megacity is achieved. The beauty and
elegance we see in the services of the Bus Rapid Transit,
(BRT), Lekki-Epe Toll Concession, the Independent Power
Plant, Oluwole and Tejuoso Market Developments, Adeniran
Ogunsanya Ultra Modern Shopping and Retail Commercial
Centres are some of the lofty ideas he has shared and executed
with the support of the purposeful leadership in the saddle of
governance in the state.
Asiwaju after wide consultations with all interest groups and
political blocs in the state is optimistic that Gbeleyi with his
background can effortlessly manage the internally generated
revenue of over N18billion of the state aand continue in the
stride of previous governnments to make Lagos an enviable
commercial base. It takes a visionary leader to fish out a
promising successor. Asiwaju Tinubu, from all ramifications
have proven that he knows one when he sees one. His ability
and confidence in his choice of BRF as his successor has
proven his insightful leadership. He will not go wrong with
Ayo Gbeleyi.
According to reliable sources, Gbeleyi, in readiness for the
task ahead, has not only received the nod of formidable
stakeholders in politics, he has built a financial war chest in
excess of N8 billion to prosecute his electionering campaign.
His readiness from all fronts, our sources hinted, gives
Asiwaju a strong conviction that he is the man for the job and
other contenders are pretenders. He has also built a formidable
media team to actualise his dream.
For Gbeleyi, it has been a calculated rise to the top. His recent
appointment on the recommendation of his immediate past
boss, the former Finance Commissioner, Hon. Tokunbo
Abiru, the express approval by the Executive Governor
Babatunde Raji Fashola and the state's Assembly speak
volume of his character and disposition towards public
service. With his record of service, wisdom and support from
all stakeholders and the people of Lagos State, Hon. Ayo
Gbeleyi is poised to steer the ship of the state to greater
heights.

Why I’m Still Single Despite Everything – BBA’s Karen Igho

BBA winner, Karen Igho is really waiting patiently for her
"real husband". Below is her latest rants…
"My celebrity status attracts and it scares men away too. It
scares some because not every man can handle or understand
fame. It takes a strong and understanding man to be able to be
with a female celebrity. The attracting aspect comes from
when they just want to be with you because they want to be
able to say 'I've been with Karen Igho.' It takes God's grace
to be able to sift the chaff from the wheat.
I'm not in any relationship at the moment because… Love is
unpredictable though; if my man comes along the way, then it
is all well and good."

We didn’t give ASUU ultimatum – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his
government did not give the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be
sacked.
Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus
meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held
at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the
Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision
of the Committee of Vice Chancellors.
"We didn't give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of
Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising
Minister of Education only passed on the decision."
Jonathan also said the strike embarked upon by the ASUU
was no longer a trade dispute , but a subversive action.
Jonathan
He said, "What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I
have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I
invite them they respond and after the meeting they take
decision and call off the strike.
"At times we don't even give them a long notice, unlike, in the
case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the
meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you
expect the trade unions to get their officials ready.
"What was expected having met with the highest authorities in
the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue
statement within 12 or latest 24 hours , to state their position
whether they were accepting government's offer or not. And
if they are not accepting they should state the reason for that."
"But despite the fact that I had the longest meeting with
ASUU in my political history, we did not start that meeting
until around 2:00pm and the meeting ended the next day in
the early hours. As far as the government of Nigeria was
concerned, all the critical people that should be in a meeting
were there, so what else do they want?
"After that they didn't meet until one week, despite the fact
that you met with the highest authority. It was unfortunate one
of them, Prof. Iyayi died.
"The way ASUU has conducted the matter shows they are
extreme and when Iyayi died, they now said the strike was
now indefinite, our children have been at home for over five
months."

I was arrested for being a Boko Haram leader – Asari Dokubo

A former President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and leader
of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji
Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, who was arrested last week in
Republic of Benin, has accused those opposed to the second
term ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan of
masterminding his arrest.

Asari, who apparently betrayed emotion on arrival at the
Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Friday night,
also said he was arrested and interrogated by Benin officials
over an allegation from Nigeria that he is a leader of Boko
Haram.

Speaking to journalists at the airport, he also described as lies
the report that Jonathan sent a presidential jet to fly him into
Nigeria from Benin.

His words: "Crisis is normal, it can also happen here in
Nigeria, it can happen anywhere in the world. The people and
government of Republic of Benin have no problem with me.
But if people alleged that somebody is a leader of Boko
Haram, the government of that country will investigate the
person.

"The allegation has much to do with 2015 because when you
read comments on social media, you find out that people who
are against President Goodluck Jonathan said they should
vilify me, and make sure I die before 2015.
Asari Dokubo

But they are not going to succeed. I am not going to die. I will
be present in 2015, and I will do what I am going to do to
ensure that Jonathan wins in 2015. There is nothing they can
do about it. This is their last fight and it is so unfortunate that
the way they are going with show how immature they are.

"I just arrived from Cotonou. I drove in my car from Cotonou
to Lagos airport where I boarded a flight to Abuja. The report
is not true. No presidential jet was sent to me.

"I do business in Cotonou, and I have been living in Cotonou
since 2008. Politically, people who are in Nigeria are trying to
fabricate lies, which are not variable, and send it to Republic
of Benin government. So I was taken for interrogation and
they found that the allegations were false, and I was promptly
released with over 20 of my staff who were also taken in."

The former warlord, however, said his arrest was a blessing in
disguise as he had an opportunity of meeting with officials of
Benin after his interrogation. "I have met with the top and
powerful people in Republic of Benin. Since I went to that
country, I have never had any reason to meet with their
government officials, but this crisis has made it possible for
me to meet with all top government functionaries of the
Republic of Benin. The crisis has raised my profile in that
country."

Asked whether President Jonathan intervened to secure his
release, he said: "It is not just only President Jonathan that
intervened, Nigerians generally intervened. The number of
people that came into Cotonou the day I was taken in, and the
following day, were over one thousand."

Photos and Tweets:Peter Okoye Fires Back At Emmy Collins For Dissing His Wedding Outfit.

People who know Emmy Collins, know how good he is at
dissing celebrities on his blog. Three days ago Emmy went on
his blog to diss Peter okoye's wedding outfit. Here's what
Emmy wrote on his blog:

If you guys don't offer accolades to me for restraining myself
from critiquing Lola and Peter Okoye during their wedding, I
will claim it in Jesus name, Amen. Yes, there were enough
talking points from that wedding yet I refused to touch them
even to the extent that a few comments insinuated that I was
playing what someone described as "Pasha".

Well, I must say that Peter and the dudes on this image were
totally off the mark when they decided to deck themselves in
this hideous polyester kaftans. As if the fabrics weren't
disastrous enough, the quality of stitching employed in putting
it together compares with the worst I have witnessed so far
considering the fact that it is Peter`s wedding for crying out
loud and of course he is not short of a bob or two. Before you
move on to the next image, please work your eyes to the
hemming of the kaftans especially that of the guys that are
flanking Peter on the left and right.

Peter who didn't find the post funny, took to twitter to ask his
fans who Emmy Collins was and a badass fan told him Emmy
is 'a failed blogger and a fashion designer' and Peter replied
by saying Emmy must be frustrated.

This is kinda Funny and I really think Emmy should relax.

ASUU STRIKE: Sack Threat Will Only Make Strike Linger – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU,
Calabar Zone, has reacted angrily to the order to return to the
classrooms issued to them by the Supervising Minister of
Education, Nyesom Wike, saying that the action would
worsen the strike action rather than solving the problem.

ASUU accused the minister of deceiving President Jonathan
on the crisis, alleging that Wike and some other unnamed
officials of the Government did not want the lingering
problem between the union and the Federal Government to be
resolved.

According to the zonal coordinator of ASUU Calabar zone,
Dr. Charles Ononuju, with such threat the crisis would linger
far longer than expected.

In a statement in Umuahia,. Ononuju said that the union
received with shock the pronouncement by the supervising
minister, saying the crisis could not be resolved that way.
"We received with shock the pronouncement of by the
Supervising Minister of Education, Wike, that lecturers
should resume work or be sacked", Ononuju said.

He said that the union had gone far with discussion on how to
resolve the crisis and was waiting for President Goodluck
Jonathan's reply to their letter after their meeting when the
minister came up with the "unfortunate" pronouncement.

"Sacking lecturers will not solve the problem but will
compound it. Wike should resign and come to the university
and teach. This is not the way to go if they go this way, the
crisis will not be resolved in the next 100 years", he warned.

Actor Saheed Balogun Drags ExWife Fathia To Court Over Her Refusal To Drop His Name

Nollywood actor Saheed Balogun has reportedly dragged his
ex-wife Fathia Balogun to court over her refusal to stop
bearing his last name, years after their marriage ended.

According to Punch, Saheed Balogun had once said in an
interview that he would stop her Fathia Balogun, from using
his name when he was ready, saying:

"She is my ex. As for my name that she is still answering, the
deed will be done soon. The Nigerian law says that after three
or four years, you can do something about it. If somebody
wants to keep my name, what of the new person coming in?

This has nothing to do with grudges."

And now, it seems Saheed is ready to do something about his
threat.

Fathia on the other hand is insisting that nobody could stop
her from using her name.

Fathia had said last year in an interview:

"I laugh, my name is Fathia Balogun and it's going to remain
Balogun; nobody can ever change that and nobody can stop
me from answering that name."

When Saturday Beats contacted Saheed and Fathia to confirm
they are in court, both refused to talk about it.

ASUU STRIKE: Police Deploys More Officers To Universities Across The Country

Following an ultimatum the Federal Government gave to
striking lecturers, the police announced it was deploying more
officers to university campuses across the country.

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said
this Thursday evening in a statement issued by the police
spokesperson, Frank Mba.

"This is designed to help secure life and property in the
Ivory Towers and provide enabling environment for lecturers,
students, academic and non-academic staff to go about their
lawful businesses without let or hindrance," Abubakar's
statement said.

10 hours before that, the Acting Minister of Education,
Nyesom Wike, had told the ASUU hey had one week to
resume.

The police boss also directed all Command Commissioners of
Police to personally oversee the intensification of surveillance
activities around universities within their State Commands.
In the statement, the police advised lecturers and students
within the Institutions to abide by the law and go about their
legitimate businesses without fear of molestation or
intimidation from any quarters.

It might be that the Wike's ultimatum and Abubakar's
announcement signify that the Federal Government is ready to
literarily force the lecturers resume work.

ASUU has been on a nationwide strike since July 1,
demanding the FG to implement a 2009 agreement it had with
the Union. The industrial action will be entering its sixth
month over the weekend should it not end until Sunday.

‘Go and die!’ Adams Oshiomole impounds widow’s goods

Adams Oshiomole is the news for the wrongs reasons
again, weeks after he was accused of spending Government
funds on Big Brother 2013 winner Dillish Matthews.
During a recent sanitation exercise in Benin City, Edo
State, a woman's goods were seized by State officials led
by the Governor himself Adams Oshiomole. The woman
who claims to be a widow is seen in a video recording to be
begging the Governor to pardon her as she knows it is
illegal to sell during sanitation. Oshiomole, a former
National Labour Congress president tells her 'you're a
widow, go and die!'.

'My husband na Police before him die', the woman tells the
Governor as she continues to cry bitterly. Her goods are
taken away from her and thrown into the trucks. Oshiomole
then walks away as lawmaker and chief of staff to the
Governor, Patrick Obahiagbon watches on.
Social media has erupted as usual with many youths
berating the Governor for his 'lack of sympathy' for the
widow.

A few comments on Twitter:

Is Oshiomole auditioning for a dictator role?

'The poor widow who Oshiomole told to 'Go and Die'
might just be one of those voters who cast their ballots for
the 'Comrade Governor'', @EmmaUgwuTheMan
'On every ground,whether as a human,governor or
man,Oshiomole erred with his statement. He should be
begging to still keep his job', Iamfotography18
'Oshiomole reminds me of Fidel Castro. Oshiomole came
into governance with good intentions, Power corrupted him.

He became a dictator.' rapper Cyrus Tha Virus wrote.

'Our nation is the headquarter of absurdity. Someone
looked at a helpless widow in the face and said 'Go and
die'.Oshiomole this is heartless', @Adekoyabee
'Adam Oshiomole's face isn't the only sub par thing on/in
him. Obviously, his heart is worse', @deolaaa wrote.
And the comments are still coming with almost everyone
asking for the Governor's head.

There has been no statements released from the Office of
the Edo State Governor so far but there are strong
indications that Oshiomole and his team will be looking at
reducing the 'damage' he's caused for himself.

Anambra GUBER Supplementary POLL: I cant be part of it – Ubah

THE supplementary election to conclude the voting for the
next governor of AnambraState is to take place tomorrow in
210 polling units across is local government areas of the state.
However, ahead of the poll, the Labour Party candidate, Chief
Ifeanyi Ubah yesterday joined candidates of the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP Comrade Tony Nwoye and the All
Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Chris Ngige in ruling
out participation in the exercise.

Nwoye, Uba and Ngige

Meanwhile, a potential judicial encumbrance against the All
Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA candidate, Chief Willie
Obiano was removed yesterday after his party rival, Rep.
Uche Ekwunife withdrew a legal challenge on his validity as a
candidate.

Mrs. Ekwunife who took second in the APGA gubernatorial
primaries had taken Obiano to court challenging his validity
on the basis that he registered twice during the voter's
registration exercise. Tomorrow's supplementary election
follows malpractises and logistical constraints that derailed the
conduct of the election in the affected polling units.

APGA candidate, Obiano was leading at the conclusion of the
voting penultimate Saturday and Sunday with 174,710 votes
against the 94,956 votes garnered by PDP's Nwoye, 92,300
scored by APC's Ngige and 37,446 scored by Labour's Ubah.
The controversies ahead of the polls nonetheless, the League
of Anambra Professionals, LAP yesterday promised to work
with whosever emerges the winner of the final election.

Ekwunife in a statement yesterday said she was withdrawing
the case due to pressure from family and friends and also, in
the interest of the party. The statement read thus: "In
deference to pressure from my family, my state Governor,
friends, Colleagues, clergymen, royal fathers, well- wishers
and the larger interest of our great party, the all Progressives
Grand Alliance, I have instructed my lawyers to terminate
forthwith, Duit Ni, GHC/ AWK/CS/ 281/2013, which we
instituted at the Federal High Court, Awka.

"I also dissociate myself from all other suits in any form or
colour against our party candidate, Chief Willie Obiano, by
any person or persons, group or groups before now or in the
future. May I use this opportunity to affirm my loyalty to our
governor, the National Chairman of our great party, our
candidate, Chief Willie Obiano and the APGA family."

Affirming his withdrawal from the election, Ubah, the Labour
Party candidate in a statement, yesterday, alleged that the
previous exercise was mismanaged by INEC.

Supplementary election

A statement by Mr. Emmanuel Ibeleme, a member of the
Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign Organisation said: "Labour Party will
not take part in the supplementary election which the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it
would hold on Saturday, November 30, 2013. It has become
absolutely necessary to issue this statement which is a final
clarification on the matter.

"So, all our members, all our supporters, all our associates, all
our friends, all our admirers and all our sympathisers are by
this statement informed that the Labour Party (LP) does not
have anything to do with the supplementary election which
INEC, contrary to reasons, said it would be holding on
Saturday, November 30, 2013."

It further said, "this has been the consistent position of both
the Labour Party and Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, the
governorship candidate in the mismanaged and mishandled,
generally accepted flawed governorship election of Saturday,
November 16, 2013. The reasons for our position have been
well canvassed at all respectable fora and need not be restated
here. However, this final statement is a restatement of our
consistent position."

Meanwhile the League of Anambra Professionals, LAP, has
stated that it would work with whoever emerges the eventual
winner of the election, even as it urged voters to turnout for
the exercise. The group in a statement by its National
President Mr. Willy Nzewi said, "against the backdrop of
INEC's decision to hold a supplementary election, we the
League of Anambra Professionals, a non-partisan body for the
development of AnambraState, want the electorate to go out
and vote peacefully for the candidate of their choice in the
supplementary election.

Complaints of irregularities

Though there were complaints of irregularities by some of the
gubernatorial candidates and their political parties, some other
political parties described the election as free and fair.
"AnambraState should never again be turned to a theatre of
war. Violence is not an option. After all, the people have no
other state than Anambra.''

Meanwhile, the candidate of the Africa Democratic Congress,
ADC in the governorship election, Chief Anayo Arinze,
yesterday, called on his party and supporters to shun the call
for the outright cancellation of the last election and participate
fully at the poll. He said, "Given INEC declaration of the
November 16 governorship election in the state as
inconclusive, we in ADC believe that only a supplementary
election will afford the disenfranchised voters another
opportunity to exercise their civic responsibility."

He declared that, "the call for outright cancellation of
AnambraState governorship election is evil, mischievous and
unpatriotic and should be ignored by all well meaning
citizens".

Buhari, Tinubu, Akande, other APC leaders in street march
Leaders of the All Progressives Congress APC, yesterday,
stormed the streets of Abuja in protest against the decision of
the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to
hold supplementary governorship election in AnambraState
tomorrow. The party had earlier called for the cancellation of
the entire election due to what they claimed as wide-spread
irregularities which allegedly characterized the exercise held
penultimate Saturday.

The APC procession was led by leaders of the party,
including: the National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande; former
military Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; former
governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and former
governor of old Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu. Other
notable members of the party who participated in the protest
were the Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume and
his deputy, Senator Ahmed Sani, Senator Kabiru Gaya,
former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba and the
former governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo.

Armoured personnel carriers

The protest which commenced from the party's national
secretariat at Blantyre Street, Wuse 2, moved through
Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent and was stopped some
distance from the INEC headquarters in Maitama. Heavily
armed policemen, soldiers equipped with Armoured Personnel
Carriers barricaded the street leading to the headquarters to
stop the procession.

After they were stopped, Akande said they led the procession
to protest against INEC's handling of recent elections in
Anambra and Delta states. He said: "We are here to say no to
rigging. We have come here to hand over our petition to the
leadership of INEC. We demand the cancellation of the last
governorship election held in AnambraState. We reject the
supplementary election scheduled to hold tomorrow because
of the wide-spread irregularities which took place during the
first exercise held two weeks ago". Other leaders of the party
including Gen. Buhari, Tinubu and Onu spoke along the same
line."

IG charges officers to remain politically neutral

Rising from a strategic security meeting with members of the
Force Management Team, the Inspector-General of Police,
IGP MD Abubakar, yesterday, assured Nigerians of the
readiness of the Force to ensure adequate provision of security
in and around Anambra State in tomorrow's supplementary
election in some parts of the State

Speaking after a strategic security meeting with members of
the Force management team in Abuja, he promised citizens of
the state that earlier security arrangements for the November
16 guber election were still in place, noting that the Force will
continue to maintain its optimal presence in the State until the
successful conclusion of the election.

The IG called on personnel of the Force and other security
agencies to rededicate themselves and be truly committed
towards ensuring a seamless and hitch free conduct of the
supplementary election.

A statement signed by Force Public Relations officer, CSP
Frank Mba, said the "IG charged the officers and men to
remain steadfast, focused and neutral and exhibit the highest
level of professionalism in the course of discharging their
duties both during and after the period of the elections in the
state".

The IG also sued for peace among the people of
AnambraState urging them to cooperate with the Police and
other relevant security agencies in ensuring an atmosphere of
peace and order throughout the remaining phase of the
election. He enjoined the politicians, traditional rulers, and
opinion leaders in the state to play by the rules and also help
in educating their followers on the need to allow INEC and
other Government agencies to see the process of the election
through.

Tweet: It seems President Jonathan has started arresting people for criticizing him

A US-based Nigerian medical practitioner and licensed
attorney, Dr Emmanuel Fashakin, was allegedly arrested this
morning at the immigration entry point at the Murtala
Muhammed Airport (MMA) by men of the SSS after his Arik
flight from New-York touched ground in Nigeria.
Former Minister, El Rufai claims he was arrested for
criticizing President Jonathan online.

Women condemn assassination attempt on Oduah

ABUJA – NIGERIAN women have condemned assassination
attempt on the embattled Aviation Minister, Princess Stella
Oduah, describing the act as 'callous and a total violation of
her right to live'.

The National President, National Council of Women
Societies, NCWS, Mrs. Nkechi Mba, disclosed this while
speaking to newsmen in Abuja, adding that the threat on the
minister's life shows that some desperate persons want to
tarnish her image for giving the aviation sector a facelift.

Mba restated women's plea to the federal government to
consider the good works she has done in the sector by
tampering justice with mercy, stating however that women
will not take it likely if anything happens to the minister.

"Women are not happy with all that is happening and we will
not take it likely if anything happens to the minister. We have
been pleading that justice be tampered with mercy yet they
are threatening and attempting to kill her.

"She has done well in the aviation sector by achieving what
has not been achieved in aviation before she assumed office
yet some Nigerians are not happy. This clearly shows that
those threatening her life are only after her downfall and
drastic measures should be taken to stop this evil act, and
perpetrators be brought to book," she stressed.

The NCWS president further condemned reports going round
on social media and in some blogs that, the said assassination
attempt was a calculated plan to divert attention from the
controversy surrounding the purchase of the two bullet proof
cars at #250 million, so as to draw sympathy from Nigerians,
saying this is 'totally false'.

"I think we should all verify the truth before jumping into
insubstantial conclusions. It is somebody's life that is
involved here yet some selfish persons are playing pranks
with it. How can anybody want to deceive others of an
attempt on her life? I urge security agencies to do all it can to
fish out the perpetrators of this ungodly act," she said.

nPDP/APC MERGER: Governors’ Defection, A Sad Development – Chief Anenih

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tony Anenih, has described the defection of five governors of the party to the opposition All Progressives Congress as a sad development.

He, however, urged party loyalists across the nation not to panic over the governors' decision.

Anenih said this while responding to questions from journalists in Abuja, on Thursday.

The BoT chairman said he took solace in the fact that the party leadership including President Goodluck Jonathan, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, former National Chairmen, Senators Barnabas Gemade and Ahmadu Ali and himself "invested enough energy, commitment, maturity and sincerity in the collective effort at reconciliation."

He said, "Indeed, I had expected the governors to stay on in the party which offered them a unique opportunity to serve their people.

"Surprisingly, they decided to abandon their home and platform to take up tenancy in an opposition party even when it was apparent that the effort of Mr. President for genuine reconciliation was enough for them to see good reason to show restraint and understanding.

"However, as adults, the final decision was and remains theirs."

Anenih urged members of the party not to be disturbed by the departure of the governors, but to continue to mobilise grassroots support for the party and the President's transformation agenda.

He noted that the party was big and strong enough to rebound, as it had always done, in the face of such challenges.

He urged them to be "rest assured" that, on its part, the party at the national level, would strive relentlessly to continue to provide focused leadership as well as "keep your hopes and aspirations alive especially at this time and in the months leading to the crucial 2015 general elections."

The BoT chairman also waxed philosophical that "What looks like a setback, in politics, can turn out to be a blessing in disguise."

ASUU STRIKE: FG Gives ASUU 7 Days Ultimatum To Resume Or Get Sacked

The five-month-old face-off between the Federal Government
and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over non-
implementation of the 2009 agreement assumed a dramatic
dimension yesterday, as the government vowed to sack any
lecturer who fails to return to class within seven days.

The government has, therefore, directed all vice-chancellors
of federal universities that are currently on strike to
immediately re-open for academic and allied activities. The
striking lecturers on their part, declared the directive by the
Federal Government a joke, saying they will never be
intimidated into calling off the strike. Supervising Minister of
Education, Mr Nyesom Wike who briefed journalists in
Abuja yesterday on the strike said it was rather unfortunate
that after a 13-hour meeting with President Goodluck
Jonathan in Abuja on November 4, 2013, the union came up
with new conditions before they could call off the strike.

He said it was obvious that the new conditions put forward by
ASUU were not in the interest of the nation. One of the
conditions was that President Jonathan should facilitate
endorsement of resolutions reached with him, which must be
signed by a high ranking government official, preferably the
Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent
secretary. ASUU said their representative as well as the
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar,
would stand as witnesses. The striking lecturers also wanted
the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for
public universities to be lodged with the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefitting universities.

They also want the government to pay their salary arrears
before resuming academic activities.

Resume or get sacked— Wike

Speaking with newsmen, yesterday, Wike said: "All Vice-
chancellors of Federal Universities that are on strike should
immediately reopen for academic and allied activities as
directed by their Pro-Chancellors. Vice-Chancellors should
ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the
enabling environment for academic and allied activities. "Any
academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4,
2013, automatically ceases to be staff of the institution and
vice-chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies
(internal and external) in their institutions".

He also accused ASUU of sabotaging the effort of
government in addressing the issues especially after having a
13-hour meeting with President Jonathan where all issues
were resolved and firm commitments were made. He said
ASUU first met with Vice- President Namadi Sambo but there
was no positive response; so they met with President Jonathan
on November 4. He said: "On November 4, 2013, in a 13
hour meeting, President Goodluck Jonathan met with the
ASUU executive, the labour union leaders from Nigeria
Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC,
where all issues were resolved and firm commitments made to
address the lingering issues.

"It is noteworthy that Mr. President's gesture was more than
sufficient to guarantee the commitment of Government to
address all issues as resolved at the meeting with Mr.
President. "At the end of the meeting with Mr. President, the
ASUU executive promised to meet with its National
Executive Committee to present the resolutions reached and
report back by Friday November 8, 2013. "As a responsible
government we cannot allow continuous closure of our public
universities for this length of time (five months), as this poses
danger to the education system, the future of our youths and
national development".

The minister therefore directed NUC to ensure all the Federal
Government universities comply with the directives saying,
"the National Universities Commission, NUC, is hereby
directed to monitor the compliance of these directives by
various institutions". When asked whether the directive by the
Federal Government to vice chancellors to reopen was not
against labour laws, he said if there were any grievances they
should seek redress in the law court.

Threats will only worsen it—ASUU

However, ASUU, in its reaction said the threat by the Federal
Government to sack university lecturers would only worsen
the situation and "another long path to make the strike linger
more than necessary." With the threat, ASUU said it was
evident now that the Federal Government was not ready to
implement any resolutions it reached with the union. While
the government is threatening to sack the lecturers, the union
disclosed that Nigerian public universities needed 60,000
lecturers owing to failure of government to employ.

The treasurer of the union, Dr. Ademola Aremu, who spoke
on behalf of the union said the Federal Government would
only succeed in wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in
the country if it failed to perfect the resolutions. ASUU said it
was trying to do all necessary things as regards the resolutions
reached with the government because it had reneged on the
promises it made with ASUP, resident doctors, and health
workers.

Describing the threat as an insult to the sense and sensibilities
of Nigerians who were waiting on the Federal Government for
positive reaction, the union said, "with the latest action, the
Federal Government has shown that they are not committed to
all they have been saying. We are saying that since we agreed
at the meeting that the sum of N200 billion is for 2012 and
2013 revitalisation, the Federal Government should deposit
same in the Central Bank of Nigeria. We are already in
November and December is around the corner.

If they don't do that now, when do they want to do it?. We
are saying the non-victimisation clause should be included as
agreed while the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should
be included as agreed with the President. "It is a pity if the
Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions
reached with union. This is why we find it difficult to hold
our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening
to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by
almost 60,000.

We are not in military era. The military tried it and failed.
This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU
did not shut down the universities. It was the school
management that ordered the students to go back home."

FG ultimatum a joke— lecturers

Some university lecturers said that the Federal Government
directive on the reopening of federal universities, which also
directed other members of staff to resume by Dec. 4 or be
sacked, was a joke. They spoke in separate telephone
interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

In his reaction to the directive, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka,
Chairman, University of Lagos branch of ASUU, said that the
development was strange and laughable.

He said that this was so considering the fact that the union
was yet to get back to the government, after their deliberations
with President Goodluck Jonathan. "Our reaction is simple.

Let us just wait for the seven days to come around. What
government has just done shows that they were not committed
in the offer they made with the union that had the Trade
Union Congress President and the Minister of Labour in
attendance. We are not going to fall to that blackmail. Now,
which one is better, government acceding to our demands or
issuing out threats?

"Honestly, this whole thing ought to have been easily
resolved, given the approach taken by President (Goodluck)
Jonathan, but it is like we want to be taken for granted after
all and it is unfair," he said. Professor Oyelowo Oyewo,
immediate past Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos,
simply described the development as "a glorified joke and
laughable". Oyewo noted that it was funny that one of the
parties which had before now been holding dialogue, would
try to intimidate the other.

"I see this whole thing as a joke and I dare say it is not even
worth my comments. We just keep our fingers crossed and
watch. I still emphasise that such ultimatum is a display of
insensitivity and a huge joke." Also commenting on the
government directive, Professor Sat Obiyan, Head of
Department of Political Science, ObafemiAwolowoUniversity,
Ile-Ife, said that the ultimatum was not the best approach to
resolving the issue. He, however, said that the threat might
achieve some success because some lecturers would resume
for fear of losing their jobs, but it would not end the crisis in
the education sector.

Obiyan said however, that it was unfortunate that the strike
was allowed to linger for so long."Nigerians are worried over
the situation; the prolonged strike is not good for the
education system in the country, but the Federal
Government's approach now is not the best.

ASUU used to threats
"What is required is little understanding by both parties to
agree on something and end the strike without aggravating it.
It is not a new thing for the Federal Government to threaten
ASUU members with sack; it was done in 1996 by the late
Sani Abacha. "For the university system to work perfectly,
you need all the personnel and not few lecturers on ground to
teach," he said. Obiyan urged the Federal Government to have
a rethink and implement the agreement reached with the
union.

He also urged ASUU to give the Presidency the benefit of
doubt that the agreement would be implemented, given the
President's intervention which saw him leading the
government delegation at the last negotiation. Also, Dr Yinka
Ajala, Head, Department of Geography,
ObafemiAwolowoUniversity, Ile-Ife, said that the threat
would ignite more problems in the education system.

Ajala said that threatening lecturers with sack should not be a
weapon for the Federal Government. He said that the ASUU
executive was being careful with the agreement reached with
the Federal Government before suspending the strike. "What
ASUU is asking for is not too much, they want government to
show some commitment with the agreement. Government can
only force few lecturers to resume but not all, even if the vice-
chancellors open registers in the institutions.

"The sack threat is a tactic that will not work; it has been used
by the military in the past, so it is not new to us. I do not
think this is the way government should handle the strike, it
will not solve the problem," he said. The Coordinator of
Education Right Campaign (ERC), Mr Hassan Soweto, said
that the ultimatum would only worsen the problem, noting
that it was against the principle of public bargaining. What
ASUU wants is some level of commitment from the Federal
Government before it will suspend the strike. It is not right for
the government to use force in a democracy," he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Agbomeji Ibrahim, a student of
LagosStateUniversity, Ojo, urged the Federal Government not
to be authoritative by giving lecturers one week to return to
classes or face sack. Ibrahim, who is a student unionist, said
that there was a better approach to resolving the issue, rather
than using a sack threat. "Both the Government and ASUU
need to accommodate each other on the negotiation table
because both parties cannot get all their demands and must be
ready to shift grounds", Ibrahim said.

ASUU's Secretary, University of Abuja chapter, Abubakar
Suleiman in his reaction said the conditions given by the
union before the strike would be suspended were still real and
insisted that the union would not compromise its stand on
account of intimidation by government. According to
Suleiman, "the strike is still on and we are not going to call it
off on account of intimidation. We are not raising any fresh
demands, we only gave government conditions to ensure that
our members who participated in the strike are not victimised.
Ekiti students embark on prayer sessions
Meanwhile, students from EkitiState, in tertiary institutions
nationwide, embarked on marathon prayers and sought divine
intervention to put an end to the strike action. The students
had converged on Lady Jibowu Hall, Ekiti Government House
where they held the prayer session, yesterday. The session had
in attendance, the state's Deputy Governor, Prof essorModupe
Adelabu and some clerics. Mrs Adelabu in her remarks
cautioned the students against taking to the streets and
engaging in illegal acts that could lead to violence and
disruption of peace in the state.

The Deputy Governor noted that the students did the right
thing by taking their petition before God. She said it was
unfortunate that both parties to the dispute – ASUU and the
Federal Government – remained adamant despite interventions
from well-meaning Nigerians. She then urged the students not
to relent in their regular prayer for divine intervention, saying
that the death of Prof Festus Iyayi, a frontline ASUU member
in an auto-crash along the Abuja-Lokoja Road introduced
another twist to the lingering dispute.

Mrs Adelabu, who expressed the hope that the prayers of the
students would yield the desired result in a matter of days,
counselled the undergraduates against engaging in activities
that could jeopardize their future.
