Nigerians commend Jonathan for centenary celebration

Port Harcourt – As activities marking the country's Centenary
ended on Friday, a cross section of Nigerians have applauded
President Goodluck Jonathan for making the celebration a
rallying point to unite the citizens.

One of the respondents, Mr Frank Chibuike, a retired teacher
said in Port Harcourt that the Nigerian nation "is a divine
project''.

Chibuike said that the centenary celebration by President
Jonathan would engender a renewed hope among the citizens
for a united country.

"I have never seen such a leader with a sense of judgment and
love for his people like President Goodluck Jonathan, very
committed to the unity of Nigeria.

"Some people may think Jonathan's hosting of the world to
mark Nigeria's 100 years is by chance, no, it is destiny,'' he
said.

Another person, Mr Napoleon Dike, a trader described the
centenary celebration as a sign for future restoration of lost
glories.

Dike said that Nigeria's unity had come to stay in spite of the
challenges of nation building, adding that the current
problems were inevitable for every emerging nation.
According to him, Nigeria is indivisible no matter what some
people may think; my gratitude goes to Mr President for
emphasising more on the things that unite us.

Mr Darlington West, a youth activist said that the centenary
celebration was a roadmap toward economic and cultural
rehabilitation.

West, who described Nigeria's tribal and ethnic diversity as
strength, said that its heterogeneity was a designed for greater
results.

He called on the president to continue to champion the
country's unity through his administration's transformation
agenda.

Church Uses Rihanna/Robin Thicke’s songs For Advertisement

A church in Kenya has come under criticism for using pop
stars Robin Thicke and Rihanna lyrics to promote there series
of sermons to be held during services for the month of March.
The posters shows a picture of a young couple with lyrics and
tittles of secular songs even including the controversial sexual
book 50 shades of Grey.

Immediately the poster went viral, social media users and
critics alike began questioning the church's motive, They felt
the church is using this to attract members instead of focusing
on winning souls .

The church's leader Pastor D. Kuria defended this saying " If
people's reception to anything is what determines how you're
going to respond then you won't go very far. I feel as I look at
society, anyone who achieves great things often times goes
against the grain of society.

Would I tone it down? I don't know. But what I do know is
that we need to be bold,"

Islamist Extremists Cut off Man’s Hand as Punishment for Stealing, then Posted the Pics LIVE on Twitter

A group of Syrian Islamist militants, of the militant organisation ISIS – Islamist State in Iraq and Syria, some
days ago posted horrifying photographs of a man having his
hand cut off in a live-update on Twitter.

According to them, the man, an alleged thief, had admitted to
his crimes and requested to be punished in this way, to 'cleanse

held down on a table while surrounded by a large group of
militant rebels.

the table, and on the right side is a man in a black balaclava
holding a large sword.

A later photo shows the man with his hand severed, the limb
resting on the bloodied table, the man seemingly passed out
after his hand had been severed.

The live-feed of the amputation, which was carried out in the
northern town of Maskanah, near Aleppo, was re-tweeted by

Two Friends Jailed 27 years For Stealing Gov. Aregbesola’s Phone

A High Court sitting in Osun State, Osogbo on Friday
sentenced two friends, Babatunde Ogunjobi and Oluwatoyin
Yusuf, to 27 years imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone
belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The convicts were said to have conspired together to steal
Aregbesola's phone at the Government Technical College,
Osogbo, on 27 November 2010, during his inauguration as
governor of the state.

The convicts were said to have used the phone to dupe
unsuspecting friends of the governor, including the traditional
ruler of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, of
various sums of money.

It would be recalled that one Kelvin Igahodowa and one other
had earlier been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the
same offence on three-count charge of stealing and fraud.
Ogunjobi and Yusuf had since 2011 been standing trial on the
matter after their arrest and subsequent detention by the
police.

Delivering judgment, Justice Oyejide Falola said the convicts
were guilty of the five counts charge of conspiracy, fraud,
impersonation, obtaining property under false pretence and
stealing levelled against them and thereby ordered them to
serve a 27-year jail
term.

Justice Falola averred that the court established that the
convicts had used Governor Aregbesola's Sony Erricson
mobile phone to defraud unsuspecting members of the public
including the Owa Obokun of Ijesha land, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran.

He said the offences committed by the convicts were contrary
to and punishable under sections 8 (C), 1 (3), (1c) and 1(3) of
the advance fee fraud and other related offences Act, 2006.
He added that the offences were also contrary to and
punishable under sections 390 and 484 of the criminal code,
Cap.34 Laws of Osun State 2002.

The prosecution team from the state Ministry of Justice led by
Mr. Dapo Adeniji, tendered many exhibits against the
convicts.

Counsel to the convicts, Mr. Akin Ladipo, pleaded with the
court to temper justice with mercy but the court refused.

Robin Thicke Cries his Heart out on Stage – ‘I’m Lost without Paula’

Robin knows he's messed up big time and he's now doing all
he can to win his woman back. According to TMZ, Robin
Thicke got back to performing last night and wasted no time
using the stage to beg for Paula Patton's mercy … opening up
to the crowd about their break-up and dedicating a song to
her.

They are officially separated but Thicke wore his wedding
ring through the show in Fairfax, VA and told the crowd:

"For y'all that don't know me and my wife separated, but I'm
trying to get my girl back. She's a good woman." He also told
fans he'd written the song "Lost Without U" for Paula …
before launching into the hit — which we gotta say is kinda
the perfect song for a guy trying to get back on a chick's good
side.

Then again, Paula's heard this tune a hundred times. Would
you take Robin back if you were in Paula's shoes?

Nicki Minaj’s wig maker drags her to court

Nicki Minaj is being sued for $30 million by her ex-wig
maker/hair stylist, Terrence Davidson.

On February 21, Davidson filed a suit against Minaj in
Atlanta claiming that the singer/rapper breached their deal and
went ahead to sell his products on her website.

Speaking to CNN, Davidson and his attorney, Christopher
Chestnut, said the rapper now markets and sells Davidson's
wig on her website with the accrued money going into her
purse, 'I see these wigs online, People are basically
duplicating what I created for Nicki Minaj,' said Davidson.

Chestnut also added, 'Nicki Minaj is reaping great success
and financial bounty reward for Terrence's creative expertise,
and he is entitled to participate in that. Someone's got to stand
up for the artist. We applaud the fact that she's making
millions, but she's also got to pay bounty to those whose
creative designs she's making millions off of.'

Davidson claims he's been making wigs for Minaj since 2010
and also gave her a unique sense of style ranging from blonde
to pink wigs. He said they had earlier planned on launching a
wig line in the nearest future but the rapper kept mute on that
until he saw her posts on her website.

Koko Master D'Banj Is Still With G.O.O.D Music - Manager

Last week, D'banj edited his Twitter bio and somehow, when he was done, his G, O.O.D music affiliation was off the bio.

This got everyone talking, and immediately possible reasons for the split emerged. Some said Kanye and D'Banj's partnership got bitter since all D'banj could gain from it was Kanye's appearance on his Oliver Twist video, a verse in the Scapegoat remix and a not more than three seconds appearance in the Mercy video.

Some others claimed it was over cos D'banj 'gained' paying hefty fees to have G.O.O.D Music acts, Pusha T, Big Sean and affiliate 2Chainz to feature on his annual show, the Koko Concert.

But in a new interview with Punch, D'Banj's manager, Tony Nwakolor says the breakup story is so untrue, that D'Banj is still with Kanye. Tony said:

"It is a lie that D'banj has left G.O.O.D music. He changed his bio on his twitter account and people started forming all sorts of story. He is still with Kanye West."

Four-year old boy kidnapped in Calabar

A 4-year old boy, Effiong Edet has been abducted at the
Ekorinim axis of Calabar, the Cross River State Capital by the hoodlums who raided the community in an Audi car with a concealed car registration number.

The kidnapers struck at about 8:30 pm on Wednesday while
the local vigilante members, majority of whom are football
lovers were preoccupied with watching the Arsenal match
against Turkish football club in the on-going European league.

The gang which is said to specialise in kidnapping
children of Kindergarten and nursery school age, stormed
Ikot Onim for a victim and on arrival at the community, drove
to Mr. Edet's compound , Effiong's father where they
sighted the boy and his friends playing around while his
mother was selling fried yam.

The hoodlums which our source said did not have a target in
mind first attempted to whisk away a six-year old boy
identified as Joseph, who strongly resisted his assailants by
crying and biting one of the kidnappers on the hand causing
them to abandon him and then swiftly seizing Edet whom
they bundled into their car and sped off.

Since most able bodied residents of the area were busy
watching the football match, there was no one to go after the
kidnappers. "By the time we got to hear what had happened,
the boys had gone far and besides, there was no available car
to go after them.", the father of the kidnapped boy said.

The matter, the father said was immediately reported at State
Housing Police Station, Calabar where the police demanded
for the photograph of the 4-year old child to enable them carry
out investigations, assuring Mr. Edet and his wife that the
perpetrators will soon be apprehended.

At press time, no ransom had been demanded just as family
sources said no contact had been established with the
suspects.

When contacted, the state Polic Public Relations Officer,
Mr. Hogan Bassey said the police authorities were working to
rescue the victim without any ransom paid, as Junior's father
was a worker earning just N6, 000 per month as security man.

CBN Governor, Sanusi, Replies Jonathan’s Query, Defends Bank’s Multibillion Naira Spending

The suspended Central Bank governor, Sanusi Lamido, has defended his bank against allegations of spending billions on extensive loans, staff emoluments, and maintenance of devices.

In suspending Mr. Sanusi last week, President Jonathan accused the CBN governor of "financial recklessness". PREMIUM TIMES had reported exclusive details of the president's second query to Mr. Sanusi early 2013, in which Mr. Jonathan demanded prompt clarification on key spending in excess of a trillion naira.

The president's query followed the submission of the CBN's audit report by Mr. Sanusi to the president on February 26, 2013. The president claimed in his letter that Mr. Sanusi's swift response on the issues raised would be helpful in providing proper "appreciation of the nation's economic outlook". It was, however, Mr. Sanusi's reply that the president forwarded to the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, on whose recommendation the president said it relied to suspend the embattled governor.

In the 22-point query, the Mr. Jonathan demanded amongst other things, the domestic report on the CBN's 2012 financial statements by external auditors and the financial reporting framework under which the financial statements were prepared.

He also directed the CBN governor to provide names of the trustees of the CBN's self-insurance, including the board minutes approving the said self-insurance scheme and trustees and the entries of the annual appropriations indicating where it was posted in the financial statements.

Mr. Sanusi was also directed to explain the composition of CBN's gratuity of N72.653 billion in 2012 and N64, 280 billion in 2011 and how it was determined as well as the board minutes and approval practice of making provisions for internal currency insurance based on the premium that would have been payable to external insurers had they been engaged. The president also wanted names of the insurance companies that were filed tested in the exercise and the modalities thereof.

The president also demanded the justification for the "Repairs and maintenance expenses" of N2.268 billion in 2012 and N2.070 billion in 2011 and the extent of repairs of printing machines and intervention activities of N19 billion in 2012 and N23.865 billion in 2011 as well as the administration of expenses of N42.596 billion and N48.340 billion in 2011.

This newspaper learnt that the query raised by the president contained basically the same questions that the Financial Reporting Council had asked CBN's auditors who had sent a copy of the audit report to it. The auditors, Ernst and Young and Pricewaterhousecoopers had responded to the questions, attaching relevant documents to back their submissions.

Those familiar with the matter said it therefore came as a surprise to the CBN when the president wrote to Mr. Sanusi asking the same questions to which the auditors had provided "satisfactory answers". Our sources said in responding to the president, the CBN governor simply reproduced and forwarded the same answers that the auditors provided to the Financial Reporting Council. In his response to the president, obtained exclusively by PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Sanusi said the repairs and maintenance expenses relate to "general office equipment and ICT maintenance".

The letter is dated May 20, 2013, two weeks after the president's query. The CBN governor said about 92 percent of the maintenance expenses were for information and communication technology equipments.

The CBN does not have printing machines, he said. On why he granted N50.06 billion as loan to Wema Bank and another N500 billion to Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, the CBN governor said the loans were necessary because AMCON was sustaining "heavy losses" while WEMA was still having liquidity challenges. He said the bank was working to recover the loans.

On the composition of the CBN's N72.65 billion gratuity in 2012 and N64.28 billion in 2011, Mr. Sanusi said employees of CBN are entitled to gratuity payments after completing five continuous full years of service with the bank. He said the gratuity is computed based on the number of years of service, gratuity rate, and gross emoluments for final year of service.

The CBN governor, defended his spending of N19 billion in 2012 and N23.865 billion in 2011 as "intervention activities" of the bank, saying the funds were channelled to critical sectors of the economy. "These activities were carried out as part of the bank's developmental role," he said.

she was caught in an unknown house with a bunch of keys
says she is cleansed and that her 'kleptomaniac' habit was not natural.

According to The Nation, she said:"I am not quitting again.

God has finally shamed my critics and enemies. It's true I
have not been around for two weeks.

I was going through marathon fast and prayers. First, I had to
go to my hometown on my mother's invitation.

That was where I stayed for about two weeks for spiritual
cleansing, and I thank God I have triumphed over my enemies. The devil has lost the battle. I am a conqueror
forever,I am a member of Redeemed Christian Church of God
in Ikorodu, where I reside.

But I only attend Christ Embassy Church, Agidingbi, Lagos,

I don't discriminate , as long as it's all for my benefit. Now, I am happy that the battle is over. As I speak to you, I am on a movie location with some of my colleagues. They are all happy that I am back. I pray that any weapon fashioned against me again shall never prosper,"

Meet the Nigerian Songwriter who made N50million from the MTN 'Mandela' callertunez

Meet songwriter Harrison Okiri aka Mr Songz!
If you are familiar with KCEE's Limpopo hit track then you
should know who Harrison is - he is Lagos-based songwriter,
who charges N1.5million to write songs.

He currently has 120 unreleased songs.

"Before now we charged between N100, 000 and N2000, 000
for a song. Today I charge as much as 1million to write a
song. Truth is, Nigerian artistes have begun to appreciate
songwriters. They pay me my money and appreciate me. I
have written a lot of songs but I don't talk about them because
Nigerian artistes don't like it when the songwriters take credit
for composing songs for them." he told Punch newspaper in a
recent interview.

He recently made a profit of N50m from the Mandela Caller
tunes on MTN.

Narrating how, Harrison excitedly said

"The proceeds from the caller-back tune is actually worth
more than N50m. Truth is, I was paid a lot of money; you
know - when they say money that can change someone's life.
That's the value of what I received.

I can't reveal the exact amount because we work as a team.
So, all the money realized is shared among us. You just want
to forget all the years of suffering. It's not a mere hype
because the money is there. The song is everywhere. You go
to South-Africa , the girls are crazy about it."

According to him, the track which is a Tribute to the late
South African leader Nelson Mandela, released on December
11, 2013, received a stunning one million downloads in a
single day. It is said to have become the most downloaded
caller tune in Nigeria and Africa.

To further reward him for the success of the callertune, MTN
sponsored his recent trip to the recently-held Grammies in the
US.

"The trip was fully sponsored by MTN and a reward for the
success of the Mandela caller tune. We were chauffeur-driven
in a limousine from the house to the airport and it was the
same when we landed in America. I experienced firsthand
some of the things I only see on TV. We flew first class and it
was my first time in America as well. Caller tunes and ring
back tunes are the future, I tell you. I never knew all this
before now."

Singer Maheeda I Rejected N2Million Offer for my child

Maheeda was once offered N2 million from the man who got her pregnant when she was 17 but she rejected the money and
went away with her, in an interview she talked about why she had to leave the money and why her daughter means the world to her.

She said "I got pregnant for my boyfriend about 13 years ago when I was just 17, in Kano. I think his family was tribalist
because they didn't want me around, so they offered me N2million, which was a lot of money back then, to leave the baby and go. I actually wanted to accept the money but I thought to myself, 'Hey, you're an orphan and this is the only blood you have.' So, I left the money and decided to leave with my daughter.

And what was the boyfriend's reaction?

"He was present all through and he never said anything, which was strange. I think he respected his family too much to intervene and fight for his daughter. I think maybe because she's a girl, that's why he didn't say anything. Ever since then it has been just me and, besides, I don't want to ask anything because I know they wanted the child and not me, and I can't afford to lose her. She's the only thing that I have."

Waje Explains Her Life And Her Music

Singer Waje gave an interview recently and talked about he life, her love for God and family as well as her work with charity.

How would you describe your journey in the Nigerian Music Industry and what are some of the challenges you've faced along the way?

The journey has been rough, I must say, though it has been one of those experiences that certify that God is with you and carrying you through the tough times. Along the way challenges can be found in every corner (being a woman in the industry was always a big one) and having to fight for the opportunity to be seen or heard so that you can prove your worth… and not always getting that chance in the end, are just some of the issues.

At what point in your life did you decide that you wanted a career in the arts?

I started singing from childhood you know and, gradually, music started becoming more than just something I did in the shower. It started to seem more like something that would define me eventually. When I became a teenager, I started to embrace the drive for a career in the arts. By the time I was 18, I was certain I was going to keep singing on and on.

What are your thoughts on the Rn'B/Afro-soul genre in Nigeria?

Afro-soul, for one, is a genre that now has its own fan base. Obviously, it has come a long way, especially in these parts where we like groovy jams and beats to shake to and all that. The present rating of the RnB genre in Nigeria deserves a thumb-up. If you tune into a radio station, sometimes, you get to listen to songs which make you proud to be Nigerian.

You are known for your 'electrifying' performances on stage. Do you have any special routine you go through before you get on stage?

I'll say my prayers first, then just get into the moment. I suck in all my stage chakra, hold in all the energy and just let it all out when I get on stage [hearty laughter].

How did you feel when your album Words Aren't Just Enough was nominated for the World Best Music (in Africa) Album of the Year category?

Oh, I felt much appreciated. I swear, it was cool. It was like being told; 'we see you, we hear you', and you present some real good stuff. That's what the nomination feels like. I was thrilled naturally, but then it gave me this drive to up my game and put in 150 per cent in forthcoming projects.

Your song Omini Knowest remains a personal favourite of many music lovers. Tell me, what were the thoughts going through your head when you wrote the song?

[Laughs]It is all these I-too-know-people and haters, the amebo society people. I just felt like addressing the issue of non-stop chatter by people who are judgemental and far too opinionated when they should be focusing on their own lives and achieving their goals. But again part of it na just normal yarns.

What are your thoughts on the state of the Nigerian music industry and what do you think should be done to better improve the industry?

The industry, as you call it, is presently in a progressive state. If you had looked at it five years back and compare it to the present, you'll see some undeniable improvement. Also, as far as what should be done to improve it beyond its present state, I think the industry as a whole needs to broaden its horizons. It should tap into more concepts, methods and ideas of doing everything music-related, whether its production, performing, recording, organising concerts, writing lyrics sef…everything in fact.

You describe your NGO Waje Safe House as a safe place for those rejected by society. What led to your establishment of the NGO?

You've just said part of it; it is about those who have been rejected by society. I started coming face-to-face with too many cases of rejection of kids, widows, nursing mothers and many others and, so, I felt the need to make my own contribution to giving them a better deal. We can all bring about some positive change in the world by doing even the least notable things. God has blessed me and I feel that I must pass on my blessings.

How do you spend your free time and what are those simple pleasures you enjoy?

I like to chill out oh. I consider some 'home time' very precious. This is a time I sit at home and just watch movies. I love to read too, just kick-back and flip through pages. Sometimes, too, I like to relax and listen to instrumentals; it puts me in a zone, a very relaxing zone.

What is your ultimate goal as an artiste?

Besides being the Number1? Well, there's also the goal to remain original forever and ever.

Who is that person you'll do almost anything for?

My daughter.

Gay Ugandans Attempt Suicide After Anti-Gay Law Is Signed

Following President Jonathan's signing of the same sex bill, Uganda has followed suit.

On Monday 24th February 2014, President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-gay bill into law. The law is aimed at criminalizing all homosexual relations; offenders face a 14-year jail term while more convictions may lead to life sentences.

CNN's Christiane Amanpour spoke to one of Uganda's gay rights activists Pepe Julian via a telephone conversation from
the nation's capital city Kampala.

She revealed that members of the gay community are afraid of losing their lives and would rather take their lives than live
under the law.

Google Hangouts 2.0 for iOS redesigned with iPad tweaks, 10-second video messages

Google Hangouts just jumped a full version number on
Apple hardware -- the first major update since it added
voice calls late last year -- and 2.0 has more than just a
new iOS 7-ready look. The new app is "fully
optimized" for iPads, with a "two-pane" conversation
view. On all devices, it's ready for animated stickers --
look out Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger -- 10-
second video messages for when your friends are
offline, and can send a map of your current location
with a few button presses. It's rolling out on the App
Store now, assuming you prefer the matchup of Google
services and Apple devices.

Xbox One update preview adds new audio, Kinect options and a fix for UK TV

Xbox One owners who received a special ticket in their
inbox are already testing out next month's update, and
they've already uncovered a slew of tweaks. Beyond the
multiplayer / party system changes and Twitch
streaming we'd heard about, fans with surround sound
headphones have been pleasantly surprised by the
arrival of Dolby Digital Audio. Another new audio
choice is bitstream output, and our friends at The
Digital Media Zone have already checked it out to
confirm the expected lights are popping up on their
surround sound receivers.

Forum posters on NeoGAF has put together a list of
changes they've as well, and several media related ones
stick out. First, the 50Hz compatibility problem that
plagued some European TV viewers using the HDMI
passthrough has been fixed. Other tweaks include a
check box to disable Kinect hand gestures while
watching a video (which would often accidentally
recognize casual movements and put an icon on the
screen), and the ability to change how much the volume
changes when commanded by Kinect. Hit the thread for
the full list, while everyone else waits until March 11th
for the update to arrive.

Google wants its Project Ara modular smartphone to cost $50

How much will a modular smartphone set you back? If Google gets its way, about $50 -- assuming you forgo all of the bells and whistles. The team behind Project Ara wants to launch what it calls a "grayphone," a barebones customizable exoskeleton that comes with little more than a screen, a frame and a WiFi radio.

That wouldn't be much of a phone, of course, but its only the bait. Google's Paul Eremenko told Time Techland that users would customize their underpowered husks at special kiosks outfitted with tools to help customers build the device that's right for them.

Sounds bold? It is, a little; the team admitted to Time that it hasn't actually reached its price target just yet, and between the FCC and public opinion, it still has more than a few hurdles to leap before its modular cellphone is ready for market. That said, Eremenko says the focus is to make Ara great, not profitable -- a statement that adds to the nebulous handset's allure.

Skip down to the attached source for Time's full rundown of Project Ara, Google's ATAP group and Eremnko's thoughts on redesigning the smartphone.

British spy agency reportedly collected millions of webcam images from Yahoo users

Britain's surveillance agency, GCHQ, hasn't fared much
better than the NSA these past several months; the latest
leak shared with the Guardian claims that Britain has
been collecting millions of webcam images from Yahoo
users. What's more, it appears that these images were
used to discover "targets" and match users with existing
persons of interest via automated facial recognition.

According to documents provided by Edward Snowden,
GCHQ intercepted still images of Yahoo video calls --
including those done with Yahoo Messenger -- in bulk
and saved them as part of a program code-named Optic
Nerve. The agency apparently collected these images
whether or not users were deemed intelligence targets --
in a six-month period in 2008, it amassed webcam pics
from more than 1.8 million Yahoo users around the
globe. The documents also reveal that these images
were collected with the purpose of identifying targets
using facial-recognition tools to compare Yahoo users
to existing GCHQ targets.

Though the revelation that GCHQ has been collecting
and viewing Yahoo user's private webcam chats is
remarkable in and of itself, the agency's naiveté is also
a bit surprising; according to documents, the agency
observed that "unfortunately... it would appear that a
surprising number of people use webcam conversations
to show intimate parts of their body to the other
person." GCHQ reportedly instituted efforts to shield
explicit images from its staff, but it doesn't require a
huge leap to understand the privacy issues at stake for
Yahoo users who assume their webchats aren't being
monitored.

Yahoo, which has taken measures to protect users in
light of recent privacy concerns, told the Guardian it
wasn't aware of this program, and GCHQ has declined
to comment. It remains unclear whether Optic Nerve is
still up and running, though we'll be sure to report on
any additional leaks if they become available.
