MICROBLOGGING WEBSITE Twitter has released an update for its iOS and Android application that finally brings image and video previews to the social network.

Previously if you wanted to view an image in a tweet you would have to click on a link, but now Twitter has rolled out image previews in its latest iOS and Android update. This means that if someone tweets an image it'll show up in your timeline without any prompting.

Twitter said, "Tweets with Twitter photos, Vine videos, and other select content now show a preview in your home timeline. Tap the image to reveal the full screen version. Tweet a picture without text and let the image say it all."

While this is good news for those looking to save valuable seconds, it does mean you could end up seeing some images you don't really want to see. For example, The INQUIRER opened its Twitter app this morning to be greeted with an image of a cartoon drawing of some male genitalia.

This also means that it will be more difficult to avoid sponsored tweets, with images from advertisers also displaying in your timeline.

The update also adds video previews to the apps, which means that Vine videos will also display in the feed, and has added actions including favouriting, retweeting or replying to the timeline, which means you can perform these actions without clicking on a tweet.

This update comes as Twitter gets ready to go public, and is no doubt a ploy from the social network to generate more revenue. The firm's IPO paperwork reveals that it thinks it's worth around $11bn.

Twitter is available to download for free from the iTunes Store and Google Play, and image and video previews are also now available on the Twitter website.
