Sad: Explosion Rocks Ondo, Kills Many

Three people including a grandmother and her grandson lost their lives while 10 others were seriously injured in the early hours of yesterday following an explosion that occurred from the facility of the Ondo State Water Corporation in Araromi Obu, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were said to have died of contaminated chemicals they inhaled from one of the cylinders of the corporation that burst at about 11.30 pm on Tuesday.It was gathered that the community located in the far end of the local government was thrown into pandemonium upon hearing the boom that came from the premises of the water corporation located along Oke Otunba street in the town.

The people of the community, many of whom were already enjoying their night rest were said to have ran out of their homes to ascertain what was happening. The rest of the victims identified as Olatayo Adejayan aka Malato was said to have been quickly rushed to the Comprehensive Health Centre in the town, where the attendants said the man would need the aid of oxygen to stabilise but the oxygen was not available in the centre.

The man however died few minutes later, while two other persons, a seven-year-old boy simply identified as Isaac, his grandmother and one other persons were rushed to the General Hospital in Okitipupa.While the woman could not make it to the hospital as she died about seven miles from Araromi-Obu, the grandson also died later at the hospital.

It was however gathered that when the officials of the water corporation got to the premises in the morning, it was discovered that one of the cylinders containing some chemicals being used for purification of water got burst forcefully and the content inflicted health hazard on the people. However, the state government was said to have sent medical personnel to the town to be able to give health assistance to the people.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, who confirmed the development, said health officers including doctors and nurses had been dis-patched to the town to give medical assistance to the people.
